A peaceful public witness by Australian Catholics has led to the cancellation of future performances at a Sydney venue that drew widespread criticism for mocking core elements of the Christian faith.
The demonstrations took place in mid-July 2026 outside a former Catholic church on Kent Street in Sydney’s central business district, where an LGBT-themed theatrical production featured what many Christians viewed as blasphemous portrayals of sacred Catholic beliefs and practices.
According to LifeSiteNews, hundreds of young Catholics gathered outside the venue to pray the Rosary in reparation while the performances were taking place. Photos and videos shared online showed faithful kneeling in prayer across the street, holding Rosaries and praying peacefully.
The demonstrations were organized by the Catholic group Prodigal Sons, which explained the purpose of the gathering in a public statement.
“Our concern is the recent material publicly promoted by the venue, including imagery and performances that many Christians experienced as a deliberate mockery and misuse of sacred Christian symbols,” the group said.
The organization pointed to several elements of the production that Catholics found especially offensive.
“The publicly accessible material included performers dressed as nuns, exorcism parodies, references to ‘unholy water’ and depictions involving Holy Communion,” Prodigal Sons said.
According to LifeSiteNews, organizers later reported that more than 1,000 Catholics ultimately participated in the prayer gathering. A statement shared alongside video footage of the event described the demonstration as an act of peaceful reparation rather than protest.
“More than one thousand faithful united in peaceful prayer, carrying Rosaries and lifting their hearts to God in reparation for the public offence against Jesus Christ,” the organizers wrote.
They continued, “Their response was not one of anger, but of faith — answering mockery with prayer, hatred with charity, and blasphemy with unwavering devotion.”
The statement concluded by saying, “It was a powerful witness that the Catholic faith will not be silenced. When Christians stand together in truth, prayer, and love for Christ, they become a light that no darkness can overcome.”
In the days following the prayer rally, the venue’s founder confirmed that the production had come to an abrupt end.
According to LifeSiteNews, the founder of the performing group, previously known as “Unholy Playhouse” before adopting the name “Divine Playhouse,” announced that the lease had been terminated and the group had been ordered to vacate the building.
“It’s over. Our lease terminated, our artists canceled, our venue being cleared out,” the founder said in a statement provided to Star Observer.
The group was reportedly given three days to clear the property.
The controversy also raised questions about government funding connected to the project. According to LifeSiteNews, Australian citizen Chris Nave launched a petition questioning the use of taxpayer funds for performances that many Christians considered deeply offensive.
“I believe taxpayers have every right to ask why public money was allocated to a project that many members of a faith community found deeply offensive,” Nave said.
He emphasized that the effort was not directed against individuals but focused on public accountability.
“This campaign has never been about hatred or attacking individuals. It has always been about accountability, transparency and ensuring that all faith communities are treated with equal dignity and respect,” Nave said.
“Our fight is not against any individuals. It is against what we believe is a mockery of our faith and is against the use of taxpayer money to support it.”
