The pro-life movement marked a significant leadership transition this week as the president of the March for Life announced her resignation, while legal victories, new scientific research, and state legislation kept abortion at the center of national attention.
According to EWTN News, Jennie Bradley Lichter is stepping down as president of the March for Life to devote more time to her family. Her resignation became effective July 31, and the organization’s board has begun searching for a successor.
In a farewell statement, Bradley Lichter reflected on the impact of the annual march, saying, “I have been humbled and inspired by the stories — so many stories, everywhere I go — of how the March for Life has changed people’s minds and hearts, how for so many Marchers it has sparked a lifetime of action and advocacy on behalf of the unborn, and in some cases, how it has changed the entire trajectory of their lives.”
Explaining her decision, she said that she and her husband are raising “two tweens and a rising kindergartner,” adding that “it has become very clear that my family needs more of my time and my active presence than I’m able to give while leading the March for Life.”
“My most important titles of all are not ‘President’ — but ‘wife’ and ‘Mom,'” Bradley Lichter said, describing her time leading the organization as “the highlight of my professional life.”
The March for Life draws tens of thousands of participants to Washington, D.C., each year to advocate for the protection of unborn children.
According to EWTN News, another development drawing attention came from a study published July 20 in the Journal of the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, which examined municipal water supplies for endocrine-disrupting chemicals, including mifepristone.
Researchers reported finding “significant levels of mifepristone (up to 0.041 μgram/l) in the water of all but one of the nine sampling classes.” The study stated that additional research is needed to better understand the presence of hormones and endocrine-disrupting chemicals in water sources.
The researchers also cautioned that, “Because of the plethora of effects of progesterone, this contaminant could affect the physiology of aquatic animals; and human health, including fertility, pregnancy, and fetal development.”
Meanwhile, according to EWTN News, the U.S. Department of Justice reached a seven-figure settlement with Catholic father of 11 Paul Vaughn following an FBI raid conducted in connection with his pro-life activism.
The Thomas More Society, which represented Vaughn, stated that the settlement affirmed the government’s actions under the Biden administration “were an abuse of government power.”
Reflecting on the outcome, Vaughn said, “My family has been through a traumatic ordeal that never should have happened. But today brings an end to this portion of the story.”
He added, “This chapter is finally closed, and our family looks forward with gratitude and hope, as we continue to serve God, advocating for the most vulnerable among us without fear.”
At the state level, the Catholic bishops of Massachusetts voiced strong opposition to legislation that would remove the state’s current 24-week limit on abortion if signed into law.
In a statement reported by EWTN News, the bishops wrote, “As Catholic bishops we have a moral responsibility to present and uphold Catholic teaching and the sacred God-given dignity of every human life from conception to the natural death.”
They further stated, “The proposed elimination of any legal restraint on late-term abortion is, in our judgment, a radical measure which is gravely immoral.”
EWTN News also reported that Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America criticized the legislation. Organization president Marjorie Dannenfelser warned, “If Gov. [Maura] Healey signs this bill into law, Massachusetts will join 10 states and Washington, D.C., with an all-trimester abortion policy where babies are killed after the point they can survive outside of the womb.”
She added, “These extreme laws that only 10% of Americans support are enabled by the ‘states-only’ philosophy on abortion.”
As leadership changes, legal cases conclude, scientific research continues, and legislative debates unfold, abortion remains one of the most closely watched issues affecting the pro-life movement across the United States.
