A taxpayer-funded museum exhibit in the United Kingdom is drawing criticism after presenting the popular Care Bears franchise as a symbol of modern gender ideology, according to reporting by LifeSiteNews.
The exhibit, created by the Villiers Revealed Project and developed by Culture Leicestershire with public funding from Arts Council England, explores LGBT themes through children’s toys and fictional characters. According to LifeSiteNews, the exhibit claims that some Care Bears are “transgender or gender fluid” and describes the toy line as “a symbol for the LGBTQIA+ community.”
Culture Leicestershire says the exhibition seeks to promote “trans narratives erased by colonialism.” According to LifeSiteNews, one display argues that the Care Bear character “Funshine” represents an LGBT symbol because the toy has been released as both a male and female character over the years. The exhibit states that “having a character like Funshine who transitions, with a positive characterization, sends a strong message to those going through a similar change.”
The exhibit also extends its interpretation to mythical creatures. According to LifeSiteNews, one display claims that mermaids are LGBT icons because their “genitalia is not visible, and therefore is irrelevant to their gender expression.”
The exhibition is being hosted at the Melton Carnegie Museum and was supported in part through taxpayer funding, according to LifeSiteNews.
The report comes as debates continue over the role of gender identity topics in children’s education and entertainment. LifeSiteNews also pointed to recent developments in the United States, including reports that Minnesota classrooms will receive educational dolls featuring interchangeable anatomical parts intended to teach concepts related to gender identity. The publication further noted that major toy manufacturers have introduced gender-neutral products marketed with inclusive language and alternative pronouns.
