In a renewed sign of the Church’s commitment to those suffering from war, Pope Leo XIV has directed humanitarian aid to both Ukraine and Lebanon, offering concrete assistance to populations enduring ongoing conflict and instability.

According to EWTN News, the Holy Father’s charitable outreach has been carried out through the Dicastery for the Service of Charity under the leadership of Archbishop Luis Marín de San Martín, the papal almoner. The archbishop emphasized the spiritual foundation behind these efforts, stating that “charity is the Gospel lived out.”

Recent shipments included a significant delivery to Ukraine, where a truck departed Rome on April 25 carrying essential supplies such as medicines, food, hygiene products, and clothing. The aid was sent from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic basilica of Santa Sofia, marking a milestone in ongoing relief efforts. “That shipment marks the 150th truck to depart from our basilica,” said Father Marco Semehen, rector of the church, highlighting the sustained commitment to those affected by the war.

The supplies were carefully selected with the most vulnerable in mind. “We have collected everything that could be useful, taking into account in particular the needs of the most fragile — the sick and the children,” Semehen explained, noting that donations included “medicines, family care packages, hygiene supplies, thermal blankets, food, and a great deal of clothing of excellent quality.”

Semehen also pointed to the importance of continued support, especially as global attention begins to wane. “For Ukraine, this continuity of aid arriving from the Vatican means a great deal,” he said, adding that “with the prolongation of the war, we have observed a decline in attention toward the needs of the population.”

The Church’s mission, Archbishop Marín stressed, is not limited to words alone. “The Church is not merely theory or doctrine; it is also practice: It is the Gospel lived out, a testimony of charity,” he said. He added that such acts of generosity serve as a powerful witness in a divided world, noting that “charity is the fitting response of Christians in the face of the spread of hatred in the world.”

Alongside the aid sent to Ukraine, the Vatican has also extended support to Lebanon, where 15,000 essential medicines have been delivered. These include treatments for common and chronic conditions such as antibiotics, medications for diabetes and blood pressure, anti-inflammatories, and multivitamin supplements. Distribution will take place through the apostolic nunciature in Beirut, ensuring the aid reaches those most in need.

The initiative reflects the Church’s global network of care, working through local churches and diplomatic missions to respond swiftly to humanitarian crises. Archbishop Marín underscored the importance of collaboration in these efforts, explaining that the dicastery operates internationally “through nunciatures and local churches,” while also seeking to raise awareness of “the terrible reality of war, the needs it creates, and how we can collaborate in concrete ways to help those who are suffering,” according to EWTN News.

In a heartfelt appeal, the archbishop called for a deeper spiritual response to the suffering caused by war. “The cry ‘Peace, peace, peace!’ must enter the minds and hearts of all,” he urged, adding, “We still have a long way to go, and we need a true conversion.”

As conflicts persist and humanitarian needs grow, the Holy Father’s actions stand as a reminder that the Gospel call to love one’s neighbor is not abstract, but lived out through sacrifice, solidarity, and service to those most in need.
