A proposal circulating on social media to rename U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has drawn a public endorsement from Donald Trump, adding new attention to what began as a tongue-in-cheek idea.
According to LifeSiteNews, the former president responded enthusiastically to a suggestion that ICE be renamed “NICE,” short for National Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT. President DJT,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, using all caps and multiple exclamation points.
The idea originated with conservative influencer Alyssa Marie, who proposed the name change in March. “I want Trump to change ICE to NICE (National Immigration and Customs Enforcement) so the media has to say NICE agents all day everyday,” she said, according to the same report.
While initially framed humorously, the concept has gained traction online among conservative commentators. Nick Sortor voiced support on X, writing, “100% agree! Make it happen,” and encouraging backing from government officials.
The White House also appeared to amplify the message, sharing a meme on X featuring an ICE agent alongside a child with the caption: “NICE AGENTS DEFENDING OUR COUNTRY.” The post further urged, “’National Immigration and Customs Enforcement.’ DO IT!” according to LifeSiteNews.
Though the proposal remains speculative, the discussion comes amid broader conversations about immigration enforcement and national identity—topics that often intersect with Catholic teaching on human dignity, the rule of law, and care for the vulnerable.
The report also noted that the Trump administration has previously supported high-profile name changes. In 2025, Secretary Pete Hegseth restored the Department of Defense to its earlier name, the Department of War. Additionally, a prior effort to rename the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts sparked public backlash.
While it remains unclear whether the “NICE” proposal could move beyond social media discussion, the episode reflects how political messaging and digital culture increasingly shape public discourse around policy and governance.
