A Catholic exorcist is sounding the alarm over the public support surrounding Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children, arguing that Christians cannot remain silent when confronted with the destruction of innocent life.
Father Dan Reehil, an exorcist in the Diocese of Nashville, addressed the Clancy case during a Sept. 6 homily about the responsibility of Christians to recognize and confront evil, according to LifeSiteNews.
Clancy’s trial ended in a mistrial after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict. According to LifeSiteNews, the defense argued that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was therefore not criminally responsible for killing her children before attempting to take her own life.
But Father Reehil focused much of his criticism not on the legal arguments surrounding Clancy’s mental state, but on the women who have publicly rallied around her case.
“There is no universe that exists where a man would kill three of his children and be going to the courthouse, and hundreds of men would show up to rally behind him,” Father Reehil said during the homily, according to LifeSiteNews. “That world doesn’t exist.”
The priest questioned what he sees as a disturbing willingness to excuse the deaths of children.
“But somehow there’s women out there that think this is a good thing. So now we are promoting killing children outside the womb. Is this not crazy? This is crazy,” he said.
Father Reehil acknowledged the claims surrounding Clancy’s mental health and medications but insisted that the deaths of the children must remain at the center of the discussion.
“Yes, I understand she was on all these drugs and all the other things. Seek help, you’re a grown woman! This is a catastrophe that … and we should pray for her. I think she has demons, to be honest,” he said.
His strongest warning was directed toward men who may be dating women who openly support Clancy.
“If you’re dating a woman right now who is a supporter of this woman who killed her children, cut bait and run for your life because one day you’ll be having kids with her and she thinks this is OK,” Father Reehil said. “I’m serious! That’s a big impediment (to) me in a marriage, just saying.”
According to LifeSiteNews, Clancy has become a focal point in a broader online conversation about postpartum mental illness. Videos of women holding their babies while displaying the phrase “Same, Lindsay” have circulated widely on TikTok, prompting intense debate over whether the posts represent compassion for mothers experiencing severe mental illness or risk minimizing the deaths of Clancy’s children.
The controversy has also reportedly entered relationships. LifeSiteNews cited one viral post from a man who said he ended his relationship because of his girlfriend’s position on the case.
“Broke up with my girlfriend over the Lindsay Clancy situation, as someone who wants to have kids in the future & was with someone who could be potentially that, I couldn’t just let her opinion/support on this situation go,” the social media user wrote.
Another viral post claimed that a divorce attorney had multiple male clients seeking to raise their wives’ support for Clancy during custody disputes, according to LifeSiteNews.
For Catholics, the controversy touches two serious moral concerns that should not be confused with one another: the dignity and protection owed to innocent children and the need for genuine compassion and appropriate care for people suffering from severe mental illness.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that human life “must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception” and that directly taking innocent human life is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person.
At the same time, Catholic teaching recognizes that psychological conditions can affect a person’s responsibility for an action. The Catechism states that responsibility for an act can be “diminished or even nullified” by factors including serious psychological or social circumstances.
Whatever legal questions ultimately surround the Clancy case, the deaths of three young children remain an immeasurable tragedy. Father Reehil’s remarks challenge Catholics to ensure that compassion for suffering never becomes indifference toward innocent human life.
