Sacred Heart of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary both connected to pro-life cause

The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary always take place one day apart because, for Catholics, they are inextricably linked, and both are connected to the pro-life cause. This year they will be observed on June 12 and 13, respectively.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents Christ’s boundless love for humanity, with his special concern – shown throughout the Gospels – for the vulnerable, the forgotten, and those whose lives were threatened.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary complements and reflects the love of her Son. Mary’s fiat—her free and faithful “yes” to God’s plan at the Annunciation—opened the door for the Incarnation. In accepting the child conceived within her womb, Mary became a model of motherhood and of openness to life.

The tragedy of abortion stands in profound contrast to the love revealed through the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These two Hearts symbolize God’s infinite mercy and a mother’s faithful love, both of which are directed toward the protection and dignity of every human life.

Jesus’s heart, pierced on the Cross for the salvation of the world, reveals the immeasurable value that God places on every human person. Every child, including those hidden in the womb, is known and loved by Christ. The Church’s opposition to abortion is rooted not merely in a moral rule, but in the conviction that each human life is a gift from God, worthy of protection because it bears the image of its Creator.

The connection between abortion and the Hearts of Jesus and Mary becomes especially clear when considering the dignity of unborn children. The Sacred Heart reminds us that Christ died for every human being without exception. The Immaculate Heart reminds us that every child deserves to be welcomed with love. Together, these Hearts call Christians to defend life and to build a culture in which mothers, fathers, and children are supported rather than abandoned.

At the same time, devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart is not only about proclaiming truth; it is also about extending mercy. Many women and men carry deep wounds from abortion. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary offer hope and healing to all who seek forgiveness and reconciliation. The Sacred Heart remains open to repentant sinners, while Mary’s maternal Heart continually intercedes for her children. Their love reaches beyond guilt and sorrow, inviting those who have suffered to experience God’s compassion.

In a world where abortion remains a source of division and pain, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary point toward a civilization of love. They remind believers that every human life is sacred, that every mother deserves support, and that God’s mercy is available to all. By drawing closer to these Hearts, Christians are called to defend the unborn, accompany those in difficult circumstances, and witness to the truth that every life is a precious gift from God.
