As Catholics across England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland prepare to observe Day for Life on June 21, Pope Leo XIV has offered a message of prayer, hope, and encouragement for parents mourning the loss of a child, including those who have suffered the death of an infant.

According to Vatican News, the Holy Father’s message was delivered through a letter from Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, addressed to Archbishop John Sherrington ahead of the annual pro-life observance.

The Pope expressed appreciation for this year’s Day for Life theme, which focuses on the humanity and dignity of children in the womb, as well as efforts to accompany parents who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a child.

In the message, Pope Leo reaffirmed the Church’s unwavering belief in the sacred value of every human life. Quoting from his encyclical Magnifica humanitas, he stated that “from the very moment of conception every human being is endowed with an infinite dignity simply by virtue of existing, of having been willed, created and loved by God,” according to Vatican News.

The Holy Father emphasized that God’s love gives meaning to every human life and points beyond earthly suffering toward eternal life. The message underscored the Christian conviction that every child, no matter how brief his or her earthly life, is known and loved by God.

Pope Leo also addressed parents carrying the heavy burden of grief after losing a child. According to Vatican News, he assured them of his prayers and spiritual closeness while expressing his hope that they will find comfort and support within the Church.

“It is likewise his hope that these parents find the support they need in the Church community and especially in a life nourished by prayer and by the Sacraments,” the Pope said, according to Vatican News.

The message concluded with gratitude for those who work to defend and promote the dignity of human life through the Day for Life initiative. Pope Leo offered his Apostolic Blessing to all participants and encouraged continued witness to the value of every human person.

Day for Life is observed annually by the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The initiative seeks to promote respect for human dignity at every stage of life while supporting individuals and families facing difficult circumstances.

The Pope’s message serves as a reminder that the Church’s defense of life extends not only to protecting the unborn, but also to accompanying those who suffer profound loss, offering them the hope found in Christ and the support of the Christian community.
