A centuries-old church dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has entered a new chapter in its long history after being officially designated an archdiocesan shrine, offering pilgrims in Mexico City a renewed place of prayer, devotion, and sacramental life.
According to EWTN News, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the historic San Ángel neighborhood was formally dedicated as an archdiocesan shrine on July 15, one day before the Church celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The designation follows an announcement made in May by Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, primatial archbishop of Mexico, that the historic church would be elevated to shrine status. Since then, the site has welcomed increasing numbers of visitors, particularly as pilgrims gathered for the July 16 feast day honoring Our Lady under the Carmelite title.
The church’s connection to the Carmelites stretches back more than four centuries. According to EWTN News, the first Discalced Carmelite missionaries arrived in New Spain in 1585 to assist with evangelization. During the early 1600s, they established one of their most important convents in San Ángel, helping spread devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel throughout the region while fostering contemplative prayer and spiritual formation.
Although the former Carmelite convent was nationalized following Mexico’s Reform Laws in the late nineteenth century and now serves as a museum, the church has continued as a place of Catholic worship. Earlier this year, the Discalced Carmelites transferred responsibility for the church to the Archdiocese of Mexico because of declining vocations within the order, according to EWTN News.
During the Mass dedicating the church as a shrine, Auxiliary Bishop Héctor Mario Pérez Villarreal explained that the elevation recognizes what the faithful have already been doing there for generations.
According to EWTN News, he said pilgrims have long traveled to the church to “seek solace and to come seeking the nourishment of the sacraments and the mercy of confession.”
Expressing hope for the future, Bishop Pérez Villarreal added, “Let us hope that this [act] serves as an encouragement for many more people to return here to renew the consolation offered by the Virgin of Mount Carmel and their love for Jesus Christ.”
He also encouraged Catholics to turn to the Blessed Virgin during moments of suffering and discouragement. According to EWTN News, he urged the faithful that when faith or hope “begin to fade,” they should pray: “Most Holy Mother, you who were able to remain faithful even [standing] before your Son’s cross, strengthen my heart.”
Pilgrims attending the dedication carried scapulars, flowers, and photographs of loved ones as they entrusted their intentions to Our Lady. Some came to thank God for answered prayers, while others sought Mary’s intercession for personal and family needs.
Among them was Claudio de la Paz, who traveled more than 500 miles from the Mexican state of Campeche to participate in the celebration. According to EWTN News, he expressed particular concern for young people, saying they are living through “times of great vulnerability,” and asked that they be especially entrusted to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Another pilgrim, Rafael Estrada, described what the devotion has come to mean in his own spiritual life. According to EWTN News, he said devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel “represents a quest for peace, serenity, and harmony,” while encouraging Catholics to seek Mary’s protection amid the many challenges facing Mexico.
The new shrine also offers a significant spiritual opportunity for pilgrims. According to EWTN News, Sister Nina Ramos of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception encouraged the faithful to visit the shrine, noting that Catholics who fulfill the Church’s established conditions may receive a plenary indulgence.
With its rich Carmelite heritage, more than 400 years of continuous Catholic witness, and renewed role as an official shrine, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel now stands ready to welcome a new generation of pilgrims seeking Christ through the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
