As many families prepare for vacations and time away from their daily routines, Pope Leo XIV is encouraging Catholics to see the summer season as more than a time for relaxation. According to Vatican News, the Holy Father is calling the faithful to use these months as an opportunity to deepen their relationship with God while extending compassion to those who continue to suffer.
The Pope shared his reflections in the July/August edition of the Italian magazine Piazza San Pietro while responding to a letter from an Italian reader who asked how to strengthen his faith during the summer. The question reflected concerns shared by many Christians living in a fast-paced world marked by conflict, uncertainty, and distraction.
Rather than focusing first on leisure, Pope Leo urged Catholics to remember those who cannot experience rest because of hardship.
“Let us think of the sick, of those who have lost hope in life, of those overwhelmed by the pain of losing loved ones, of the victims of war, hatred, terrorism, and violence, of those persecuted for their faith and for justice, of prisoners, of those who have lost their jobs or their homes, and of migrants who are not welcomed with humanity.”
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo said vacations should become a time to renew authentic relationships and experience a glimpse of the communion found in God’s Kingdom. He encouraged Christians to embrace the season as an opportunity to grow spiritually by putting the Gospel into practice.
“In order to strengthen one’s faith,” the Pope said, Christians should “make use also of the summer to live out the Gospel of peace and mercy.”
According to Vatican News, the Holy Father also addressed families directly, encouraging parents, children, young people, and older adults to use the summer for meaningful social and religious experiences that strengthen both family life and the Church. He expressed particular concern for those who may be isolated, urging relatives not to neglect elderly family members and encouraging volunteers to continue serving those in need.
Speaking to those involved in charitable work, Pope Leo offered words of encouragement rooted in Christian hope.
“Commit yourselves to bringing humanity and hope to those who suffer, and you will see the fruits of grace. You will discover how much love will fill your lives, how much joy, how much happiness.”
According to Vatican News, the Pope also warned against allowing vacations to become centered on excessive consumption or material comfort. Instead, he encouraged Christians to embrace a simpler way of living that reflects the values of the Gospel.
“Let us also avoid excess and waste, materialism and consumerism, and let us educate ourselves in simplicity and moderation,” he said, adding that “the accumulation of wealth hinders evangelization.”
The Pope concluded by reminding Catholics that every season offers an opportunity to respond to God’s grace and to become instruments of peace in a world wounded by conflict.
“God’s love and grace reach us every day, always,” Pope Leo said. “Let us help one another, in every community, not to squander this precious heritage of humanity and peace, the only hope for giving a future to a world threatened by war.”
