Catholic Priest Dies After Massive Crucifix Falls During Livestreamed Mass in Ecuador

A Catholic community in Ecuador is mourning the sudden death of a beloved priest after a large crucifix fell from the wall of his church, striking him as he celebrated Mass. The tragic incident, captured during a livestream, has prompted an outpouring of prayers and condolences from parishioners and fellow Catholics.

Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a Redemptorist priest serving at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador, died following the accident on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

According to the Daily Mail, Father Sánchez Molinari was broadcasting Mass through his personal social media accounts when the crucifix mounted high on the wall behind the altar suddenly became detached.

Approximately 27 minutes into the livestream, the large cross bearing the image of the crucified Jesus tilted forward and fell toward the priest, striking him as he stood at the altar.

The US Sun reported that Father Sánchez Molinari had just adjusted his glasses moments before the crucifix fell. The impact knocked him down, and parishioners immediately rushed toward the altar to assist him.

The livestream captured the distress of those witnessing the accident. According to the Daily Mail, one woman repeatedly cried out, “Padre!” before shouting, “Call an ambulance!”

The broadcast ended shortly afterward.

On Sunday, October 18, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil publicly confirmed Father Sánchez Molinari’s death and offered prayers for the repose of his soul.

In a statement shared on social media and reported by the Daily Mail, the archdiocese announced:

“We announce that our dear Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sanchez Molinari, CSsR.—who served as parish priest of the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Perpetuo Socorro) in the Central Vicariate—has departed for the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory.”

The archdiocese also expressed its solidarity with the priest’s religious community, family, and friends.

According to The US Sun, the archdiocese stated that it “joins in prayer for the eternal rest of his soul and expresses its solidarity, affection and love to the Redemptorist family, his relatives and friends.”

The circumstances surrounding the crucifix’s collapse remain unclear. The Daily Mail reported that the archdiocese had not disclosed what caused the structure to fall or whether an investigation would take place.

Although The US Sun reported that the priest died immediately from the impact, the Daily Mail noted that the archdiocese’s announcement did not specify whether he died at the church or later from his injuries.

Father Sánchez Molinari belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious congregation founded by St. Alphonsus Liguori in 1732.

The congregation is particularly known for its missionary work and commitment to bringing the Gospel to poor, neglected, and spiritually underserved communities.

Its motto, drawn from Psalm 130:7, proclaims, “With Him there is plentiful redemption.”

As news of the priest’s death spread, those who knew him shared memories of his ministry and the spiritual influence he had on their lives.

According to the Daily Mail, one mourner remembered him as “A great priest, a great friend. A true missionary of Christ.”

Another expressed profound grief over the unexpected loss, recalling his generosity and the guidance he offered to others.

“You were an excellent, charitable priest. Rest now, Father; may God hold you in His holy glory,” the mourner wrote in a message translated from Spanish by the Daily Mail.

For the Catholic faithful, the tragedy is especially sorrowful because it occurred during the celebration of the Mass, the Church’s central act of worship, in which Catholics gather to participate in the Eucharistic sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Father Sánchez Molinari’s death has left his parish community grieving a priest remembered for his charity, friendship, and dedication to serving Christ.

As Catholics remember his life and priestly vocation, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil has invited the faithful to pray for his eternal rest.

Its announcement concluded with the traditional Catholic prayer for the dead: “Requiem æternam dona ei, Domine. Et lux perpétua lúceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen.” In English, this means, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.”

We invite Catholics around the world to join us in praying for the soul of Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, for his grieving family, his fellow Redemptorists, and the parish community he faithfully served.
