The mortal remains of Pope Francis were transferred Wednesday morning from the Casa Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica, where his body now lies in state for the faithful to pay their final respects until his funeral on Saturday.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, presided over the Rite of Translation, offering a prayer of gratitude for Pope Francis’ 12 years of service. “Let us thank the Lord for the countless gifts He bestowed on the Christian people through His servant, Pope Francis,” he prayed.

The College of Cardinals led a solemn procession through Santa Marta Square into St. Peter’s Square, where more than 20,000 mourners gathered. Applause echoed gently through the crowd as the coffin was carried into the basilica and placed at the Altar of the Confession.

The liturgy included a Gospel reading from John 17, the Litany of the Saints, and the Salve Regina. Afterward, cardinals and pilgrims lined up to offer their prayers.

St. Peter’s Basilica will remain open from 7 AM to midnight on Thursday, and from 7 AM to 7 PM on Friday. The Vatican has indicated that hours may be extended due to the high number of visitors.

Cardinal Farrell will return Friday at 8 PM to preside over the sealing of the coffin. The Funeral Mass will follow on Saturday, April 26, at 10 AM in St. Peter’s Square, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. The late Pope will then be entombed at the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
