In a move intended to shift military policies away from “radical gender ideology,” President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 27 reversing directives from the Biden administration that permitted transgender individuals to serve in the armed forces. The new order emphasizes the importance of physical and mental readiness in fulfilling the military’s mission and prioritizes policies that align with natural law and Catholic teachings on the human person.

A Focus on Truth and Honesty

The executive order states that “military service must be reserved for those mentally and physically fit for duty” and highlights concerns about policies accommodating individuals who identify with a gender different from their biological sex. Specifically, it states, “A man’s assertion that he is a woman, and his requirement that others honor this falsehood, is not consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member.” This focus on truth and honesty aligns with Catholic teaching, which emphasizes the need to live in accordance with the natural order established by God.

The policy also addresses the moral and practical implications of gender transition procedures in the military. From 2016 to 2021, the Department of Defense spent approximately $15 million on gender transition services, according to a Congressional Research Service report. The Trump administration argues that such expenditures and accommodations detract from the military’s primary mission.

Protecting Privacy and Promoting Dignity

The order establishes new guidelines for sleeping, changing, and bathing facilities, requiring them to be separated by biological sex. Exceptions to this rule are allowed only in cases of “extraordinary operational necessity.” This measure aims to protect the privacy and dignity of all service members while ensuring cohesion within military units.

The Trump administration also directed the Department of Defense to end the use of pronouns inconsistent with a person’s biological sex. This policy shift underscores the administration’s belief that accommodating divergent gender identities undermines the military’s emphasis on discipline, truthfulness, and unity.

Theological Reflection: Protecting the Body of Christ

For Catholics, this decision can be viewed in light of the Church’s teaching on the dignity of the human person and the importance of recognizing God’s design. As Pope Francis has stated, “It is one thing to have homosexual tendencies or a sexual orientation, but it is another to teach gender theory in schools and thereby change mentalities. I call this ideological colonization” (Amoris Laetitia, 56).

By emphasizing the importance of biological sex and rejecting policies that affirm gender identities inconsistent with this reality, Trump’s order reflects a commitment to preserving the integrity of the human person as created in God’s image.

Restoring Military Standards and Ending DEI Initiatives

Trump also signed additional executive orders aimed at restoring traditional military values. One order eliminates diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which the president described as “race and sex preferences within the armed forces” that “undermine leadership, merit, and unit cohesion.” According to the executive order, DEI initiatives promote “invidious race and sex discrimination,” which violates the conscience rights of service members.

Additionally, another order reinstates members of the military who were discharged for refusing COVID-19 vaccination and provides back pay and benefits to those affected.

Upholding the Mission of the Military

The primary mission of the military, according to the executive order, is “to protect the American people and our homeland as the world’s most lethal and effective fighting force.” The text emphasizes that “success in this existential mission requires a singular focus on developing the requisite warrior ethos,” free from distractions caused by ideological or political agendas.

For Catholics, this renewed focus on readiness and cohesion resonates with the call to serve the common good. St. John Paul II wrote in Evangelium Vitae that society must foster “the defense of life, peace, and justice” (EV, 101). By refocusing on the military’s essential mission, this policy seeks to uphold these principles.

President Trump’s executive orders represent a significant shift in military policy, with an emphasis on truth, readiness, and respect for natural law. While these changes may spark debate, they align with Catholic values that emphasize the dignity of the person, the importance of moral clarity, and the need to uphold justice in every sphere of society. For faithful Catholics, this moment serves as an opportunity to reflect on how policies governing the military can better reflect the values of humility, integrity, and service to the common good.
