The extraordinary complexity found within every living cell is raising an ancient question in a distinctly modern form: Can life, with all its order and information, truly be explained without a Creator?
For Dr. Orson Wedgwood, a New Zealand-based healthcare researcher with a Ph.D. in Organic Medicinal Chemistry, the information encoded in DNA provides compelling reason to believe intelligence stands behind life.
“It’s a language, and this does provide evidence for intelligence,” Wedgwood told the Daily Mail.
Wedgwood’s argument centers not simply on DNA’s complexity, but on what DNA actually does. Within living cells, genetic material carries instructions used in the production of proteins, while proteins themselves play essential roles in copying and translating those genetic instructions.
According to the Daily Mail, Wedgwood became particularly interested in this relationship through his doctoral work, which involved designing drugs that interfered with DNA replication and translation. His later investigation into the origins of life intensified during a period in which his Christian faith was being challenged.
After examining research into how life might have emerged from non-living matter, Wedgwood became convinced that existing explanations face problems that go far beyond merely filling in a few missing scientific details.
“There are three types of insurmountable hurdle – chemical, statistical and conceptual,” he told the Daily Mail.
Among his concerns is the relationship between DNA and proteins. Modern cells depend upon DNA for the instructions needed to produce proteins, yet proteins are themselves involved in copying and translating those instructions. Wedgwood questions how such an interdependent system could have arisen without intelligence.
He also points to another basic requirement of life: the cell membrane.
“You need a barrier around a cell for the contents to stay together and function as a unit,” Wedgwood said.
According to the Daily Mail, researchers have proposed possibilities including oily bubbles or compartments within rocks that could have enclosed primitive chemical systems. Wedgwood argues that such proposals still leave unanswered the question of how a living cell acquired its own functional protective boundary.
Scientists continue to investigate natural explanations for the origin of life. One prominent area of research is the RNA World hypothesis, which proposes that simpler RNA-based systems existed before the complex DNA-and-protein machinery found in modern cells.
The Daily Mail notes that a 2024 study from Gerald Joyce’s laboratory demonstrated an RNA enzyme copying functional RNA in a manner potentially relevant to molecular evolution. The experiment did not reproduce the origin of life itself, but it offered experimental evidence concerning one possible step in a natural pathway.
Wedgwood remains unconvinced that such research resolves the larger problem.
He argues that the genetic system behaves less like random chemistry and more like information. “Every other code is a result directly of intelligence, and that sort of speaks to the evidence of perhaps an intelligent originator,” he told the Daily Mail.
For Catholics, the mystery of life ultimately reaches beyond the laboratory.
Science can investigate chemical reactions, genetic mechanisms and the physical history of living organisms. The Catholic faith does not require believers to reject legitimate scientific investigation into those processes. But discovering a physical mechanism by which something occurs does not answer the ultimate question of why there is a universe capable of producing life in the first place.
For Christians, life does not have its ultimate source in an accidental puddle, an undersea vent or even the molecules contained within DNA. Its source is God the Father, Creator of heaven and earth.
That conviction does not depend upon proving that every proposed natural mechanism is impossible. God remains Creator whether He brings about His purposes through processes that science can describe or through realities beyond present human understanding.
DNA therefore presents something worthy of profound wonder. Within microscopic cells resides an extraordinarily ordered system capable of storing, transmitting and expressing the biological information necessary for life.
Science continues seeking the earliest physical chapters of that story. Faith points beyond them to the Author.
And as researchers continue asking how life began, Catholics can confidently affirm the deeper truth at the heart of creation: life ultimately comes from God.
