Forced Abortions and Abortion Pill Abuse Raise Growing Concerns for Women and Unborn Children

A growing number of reported cases involving women who were allegedly given abortion drugs without their knowledge or consent is raising alarm among pro-life advocates, pregnancy resource organizations, and medical professionals who warn that chemical abortion drugs can be misused as instruments of coercion and abuse.

According to EWTN News, Heartbeat International recently launched a tracker documenting reported incidents in which abortion pills were allegedly used against pregnant women without their consent. The organization has identified 17 publicly reported cases dating back to 2007, including two cases already documented in 2026.

One recent case in Kentucky drew national attention after a man allegedly replaced his pregnant girlfriend’s medication with abortion drugs. The child survived, but Heartbeat International says many other unborn children have not.

Andrea Trudden, spokesperson for Heartbeat International, told EWTN News that the documented incidents likely represent only a small portion of the actual problem.

“Publicly reported cases likely represent only a fraction of what is actually occurring,” Trudden said. “Many women never report what happened to them, particularly when the person responsible is someone they know and trust.”

Heartbeat International created the tracker to provide what Trudden described as “a factual resource” that could help reveal troubling patterns that might otherwise remain hidden.

Among the cases cited by EWTN News was an incident in Texas in which a pregnant woman allegedly lost her child during the fourth month of pregnancy after a man secretly administered abortion drugs to her. Another Texas case in 2025 resulted in capital murder charges against a man accused of crushing abortion pills into his girlfriend’s drink, causing the death of her unborn child.

EWTN News also reported on an Ohio case from 2024 in which physician Hassan Abbas allegedly forced abortion drugs into his pregnant girlfriend’s mouth, resulting in the death of her unborn child.

Christa Brown, senior director of Medical Impact for Heartbeat International and leader of the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, said her organization is increasingly hearing from women who report pressure, coercion, or fears that they have been secretly given abortion drugs.

“We are hearing from more women who feel pressured into abortions they do not want, many coerced or forced abortions, and we are increasingly hearing from women who believe they are being poisoned with abortion drugs,” Brown said, according to EWTN News.

She added that many affected women feel isolated and uncertain about where to seek help.

“Many of these women are frightened, confused, and unsure where to turn. They often are afraid that no one will believe them.”

Brown emphasized that every woman should be able to make decisions regarding pregnancy free from manipulation or violence.

“Every woman deserves to make decisions about her pregnancy free from coercion, threats, manipulation, violence, or deception,” she said.

The concerns come amid ongoing debate over the regulation of abortion drugs. EWTN News noted that abortion pills can be obtained through telehealth services and shipped across state lines, in some cases without a video consultation, creating opportunities for misuse by individuals seeking to impersonate pregnant women or obtain the drugs for unlawful purposes.

Pro-life organizations have urged government officials to revisit current policies governing chemical abortion drugs.

Kristi Hamrick of Students for Life Action told EWTN News that current policies have made abortion pills more accessible to abusers.

“The chemical abortion pill policies left in place by the Trump administration empower abusers and pill pushers and abandon women and children,” Hamrick said.

She called for enforcement of federal laws governing the shipment of abortion-related materials and encouraged local leaders to educate women that coercion into abortion is a crime.

Live Action spokesman Noah Brandt also expressed concern over what he described as the dangers associated with chemical abortion.

“These tragedies are the predictable result of turning abortion into a no-oversight, mail-order business,” Brandt told EWTN News.

Brandt noted that chemical abortions now account for a majority of abortions in the United States and argued that abortion drugs pose risks not only to unborn children but also to women vulnerable to abuse.

“The abortion pill regime does not empower women. It endangers them and equips predators,” he said.

For many Catholic and pro-life organizations, the response extends beyond public policy. Pregnancy resource centers across the country continue offering practical assistance, counseling, and support to women facing pressure to abort.

According to EWTN News, Trudden said pregnancy help organizations are often uniquely positioned to recognize signs of coercion and connect women with safety resources and support services.

She also highlighted the work of the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, which seeks to help women who regret taking the first abortion drug and wish to continue their pregnancies.

As reports of forced abortions and abortion pill misuse continue to emerge, pro-life advocates are calling for greater awareness, stronger protections for women, and renewed efforts to defend both mothers and their unborn children from coercion and violence.
