As social and political divisions continue to deepen across many parts of the world, Pope Leo XIV has urged the Church to become a visible witness of unity rooted in Christ, reminding bishops that the Church’s true strength is found not in earthly resources but in holiness, fidelity, and communion.
Speaking to the bishops of Spain during a meeting at the headquarters of the Spanish Episcopal Conference in Madrid on Monday, the Holy Father encouraged them to remain steadfast in their mission of shepherding God’s people amid growing cultural polarization.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo told the bishops, “The strength of the Church does not come from the greatness of her resources, but from the holiness of Her children, from the communion of Her pastors, and from the humble and persevering fidelity of those who allow themselves to be guided by the Spirit.”
The Pope stressed that bishops are called to protect unity within the Church while fostering authentic dialogue and accompanying the faithful through the challenges of modern society.
Reminding the bishops that Christ remains the true leader of the Church, Pope Leo said, “It is the Lord who leads us” and emphasized that believers must follow His guidance together as members of one body.
The Holy Father noted that the increasing divisions seen throughout society place a particular responsibility on the Church to offer a different witness. According to Vatican News, he said this bond with Christ requires the Church, “in this time of increasing polarization and division, offer a witness to unity in diversity.”
Pope Leo explained that authentic unity does not erase differences but embraces the various gifts, charisms, and spiritual sensibilities present within the Church. He highlighted the bishop’s role as a visible sign of communion and urged them to remain firmly rooted in Catholic faith and tradition.
“We are called,” the Pope said, “to be a visible sign of communion: first and foremost, of communion with Christ, lovingly safeguarding the faith we have received, in docility to the Word of God and to the living Tradition of the Church.”
He further encouraged the bishops to strengthen bonds within their dioceses, promoting unity among priests, religious communities, lay associations, and ecclesial movements. Such communion, he explained, contributes directly to the Church’s missionary mission.
The Holy Father also emphasized the importance of evangelization and outreach. According to Vatican News, he observed that “A Church that is interiorly at peace” is better equipped to engage with Christians of other denominations, followers of other religions, civil authorities, nonbelievers, and all people seeking the common good.
Special attention, he said, should be given to young people, seminarians, and those who are vulnerable or suffering.
Turning to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom he described as “the mother of communion and hope,” Pope Leo entrusted the bishops and their ministry to her maternal care. Recalling that Spain has long been known as “Mary’s Land,” he encouraged them to look to the Mother of God as a model of faithful discipleship and unity.
The Pope also reflected on the 500th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Saint John of Avila, patron of the Spanish clergy. He pointed to the saint as an example of priestly holiness and pastoral dedication, urging bishops to foster strong spiritual lives among their priests.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo described exemplary priests as men who are “in love with Christ, rooted in prayer, faithful to the Church, close to the people, and capable of uniting sound doctrine, apostolic zeal and pastoral charity.”
He reminded the bishops that their priests should see them not merely as administrators or authorities but as spiritual fathers who accompany them through the joys and burdens of ministry.
Concluding his address, Pope Leo invoked a prayer attributed to Saint John of Avila: “If you command me, Lord, to do what you did, give me your heart.”
The Holy Father then prayed that Christ would grant the Church a heart capable of listening, discerning, serving, correcting with charity, and proclaiming the Gospel with joy.
“For the Church that receives the heart of Christ,” Pope Leo said, “carries with her the pillar of fire that guides Her, sustains Her, defends Her and comforts Her — the provisions necessary to face every challenge.”
His message offered a powerful reminder that amid division and uncertainty, the Church’s mission remains rooted in communion with Christ and in bringing His unity to a fractured world.
