In an extraordinary escalation between the Vatican and the White House, Pope Leo XIV has now directly rebuked false claims made by President Donald Trump regarding the Church’s position on nuclear weapons and Iran, marking what many Catholics see as one of the most unprecedented public confrontations between a pope and a sitting U.S. president in modern history.
Writing in a sharply critical opinion essay, Deacon Steven D. Greydanus argued that the situation is nearly without historical precedent, asking, “Has any prior pope ever called out a U.S. president for lying?” He also questioned whether any president had ever “repeatedly, publicly falsely accused a pope of taking positions antithetical to Catholic teaching.”
The controversy centers on repeated claims by President Trump that Pope Leo XIV supports Iran possessing nuclear weapons. According to Greydanus, Trump claimed during an April 16 exchange with reporters that “The pope made a statement. He says Iran can have a nuclear weapon.” Greydanus noted that “No such statement, needless to say, existed.”
Rather than backing away from the accusation, Trump intensified his rhetoric again on May 5. Greydanus quoted the president as saying:
“The Pope would rather talk about the fact that it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. I don’t think that’s very good. I think he’s endangering a lot of Catholics and a lot of people.”
For many Catholics, the remarks crossed a line far beyond ordinary political disagreement. The Catholic Church has long maintained strong opposition to nuclear weapons and nuclear escalation, making Trump’s accusation especially inflammatory.
According to Greydanus, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin initially responded cautiously, saying the Pope would continue “preaching the Gospel” and “preaching peace.” But later that same day, Pope Leo XIV personally addressed the controversy in remarks that observers immediately interpreted as a direct response to Trump.
“I have been speaking out ever since I was elected,” Pope Leo said, according to Greydanus’ account. “The Church’s mission is to preach the gospel, to preach peace.”
Then came the line now reverberating across Catholic and political circles:
“If anyone wishes to criticize me for proclaiming the gospel, let that person do so truthfully.”
The Pope also reaffirmed the Church’s longstanding opposition to nuclear weapons, declaring, “For years, the Church has spoken out against all nuclear weapons, so there is no doubt on that point.”
Greydanus argued that the Pope’s words amounted to a clear public condemnation of Trump’s dishonesty. “The president doubled down on a lie about the pope’s stance on a critical issue,” he wrote, adding that Pope Leo “insisted that he was being criticized merely for ‘proclaiming the gospel’ of peace, and not ‘truthfully.’”
The opinion piece also criticized Catholic figures who have attempted to minimize the growing divide between the Vatican and Trump. Greydanus specifically referenced efforts by some Catholic Trump defenders to claim there is no serious conflict between the two leaders, arguing instead that “The reality is impossible to miss.”
Beyond politics, Greydanus framed the moment as a spiritual and moral crisis for American Catholics. He described Trump’s leadership style as a “wrecking-ball approach—to truth, norms, institutions, democracy, human lives.” He also reflected on the pain many Catholics feel watching fellow believers defend behavior they view as incompatible with Christian morality.
At the same time, Greydanus praised Pope Leo XIV for offering clarity and moral courage during a deeply divisive cultural moment. He wrote that the Pope has helped many Catholics feel “less alone” amid growing political polarization.
The deacon concluded that the confrontation between Trump and Pope Leo is forcing Catholics to confront an increasingly unavoidable choice between political loyalty and fidelity to the Gospel.
“The clarity of that choice continues to grow,” he warned.
