Concerns are mounting within the Catholic world following reports that Pope Leo XIV may take canonical action against members of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) ahead of planned episcopal consecrations later this year.
According to LifeSiteNews, citing Roman sources reported by Rorate Caeli, the Holy Father is expected to follow the precedent set by Pope John Paul II in 1988 by declaring automatic excommunications for bishops involved in consecrations carried out without papal approval. Such actions would be considered a “schismatic act,” with those participating potentially incurring excommunication ipso facto, meaning automatically by the act itself, according to the report.
The anticipated consecrations, reportedly scheduled for July 1, have intensified longstanding tensions between the Vatican and the SSPX, a priestly fraternity founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre that has operated in an irregular canonical status for decades.
SSPX Bishop Bernard Fellay acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating in a recent sermon that “there is an enormous probability that all of you, we included, may be excommunicated, declared in schism,” adding that “there is a very high probability because they already said it in public.”
Further speculation has emerged that the scope of possible penalties could extend beyond bishops. Vatican correspondent Niwa Limbu claimed that the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith “is preparing the possibility of an excommunication of the whole SSPX,” which could include priests and potentially others associated with the society, according to LifeSiteNews.
At the heart of the dispute are doctrinal and ecclesial concerns, particularly regarding the Second Vatican Council. Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, has reportedly insisted that full acceptance of Vatican II documents is necessary for the SSPX to achieve regular canonical status, according to LifeSiteNews.
However, the SSPX and its defenders argue that certain conciliar texts are pastoral rather than doctrinal and remain open to discussion. Bishop Athanasius Schneider and other commentators have similarly suggested that the SSPX maintains doctrinal, sacramental, and hierarchical elements of communion with the Church, raising further questions about the appropriateness of severe canonical penalties.
The situation is further complicated by comparisons drawn by some Catholic commentators, who note that similar penalties have not been imposed in other cases of episcopal consecrations without papal approval, including those involving the Chinese Communist Party, according to LifeSiteNews.
As of now, the Vatican has not issued an official statement confirming these reports. Meanwhile, SSPX leadership has indicated a desire for dialogue, with Superior General Father Davide Pagliarani noting that it would be “desirable to know personally those who are to be judged” before any declaration of schism is made.
