Christians Blocked from Holy Week Worship in Jerusalem as Violence Erupted at Sacred Sites

Christians marking one of the holiest moments of the liturgical year faced significant restrictions and reported violence in Jerusalem, raising renewed concerns about religious freedom in the city central to the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

During the Holy Saturday celebration of the sacred fire at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Israeli security measures severely limited access for worshipers, according to reports cited by LifeSiteNews. The ceremony, held at the site of Christ’s tomb, draws thousands of pilgrims each year from across the world.

Dr. Jerry Pillay, general secretary of the World Council of Churches, said the event was “marked with violence against Christian worshipers, as Israel security personnel once again denied Christians their right to worship freely in Jerusalem,” according to the report.

Many faithful attempting to enter the Old City encountered tightly controlled checkpoints. “Worshipers who managed to enter Jerusalem’s Old City found themselves trapped between checkpoints placed a few meters from one another. Access to the Holy Sepulchre Church was denied,” Pillay explained.

Reports from the Israeli human rights group Ir Amim described further incidents, stating that police “violently assaulted scout groups marching in the Old City of Jerusalem, disrupting processions, making arrests, and attempting to forcibly remove Palestinian flags from scouts’ uniforms.”

The organization also noted that authorities “restricted access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, preventing many worshippers from taking part in one of the most sacred ceremonies of the year.”

For centuries, the Holy Fire ceremony has stood as a powerful sign of the Resurrection, with the flame believed by many to emerge miraculously from Christ’s tomb and then shared among the faithful. For Christians, especially in the Holy Land, participation in this ancient rite is deeply tied to their spiritual identity and heritage.

A Catholic priest living in Jerusalem told LifeSiteNews that such restrictions have intensified over the past decade. He described what he sees as a deliberate effort “to limit church apostolic activity as much as possible without raising international alarm bells.”

While acknowledging legitimate safety concerns due to large crowds in the Old City’s narrow streets, the priest said authorities often use “a very heavy hand in their application of law,” adding that “this is creating a great deal of anger.”

Church leaders have repeatedly raised alarms about these developments. In previous statements, the Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem condemned similar actions as “reprehensible,” saying they “deprived thousands of believers of their divine right to prayer and worship.”

Theophilos III has also warned that increasing limits on Holy Week participation violate longstanding agreements protecting access to holy sites. He emphasized that such access is not merely logistical, but a sacred right rooted in centuries of Christian presence and faith.

Pillay echoed this concern, noting that repeated appeals to protect Christian worship in Jerusalem have gone unanswered. The World Council of Churches is “asking the government of Israel, once again, to allow unimpeded access to Jerusalem’s holy sites as per the Status Quo, and to refrain from violence against worshipers who simply want to exercise their faith,” he said.

He added a sobering conclusion: Christians “are feeling increasingly unwelcome in Jerusalem, and this message needs to reach the entire world.”

As the Church continues to proclaim the victory of Christ over sin and death during Easter, these events serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by Christians in the very land where the Gospel first took root.
