Newly declassified intelligence documents released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard are reigniting debate over the origins of COVID-19 and the role played by former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci.
According to documents released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), Fauci directed millions of dollars in U.S. taxpayer funding toward coronavirus research connected to China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology and later participated in discussions concerning intelligence assessments on the origins of the virus.
The release was highlighted by LifeSiteNews, which reported that the newly declassified materials allege Fauci “provided millions in U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund dangerous gain-of-function research” involving bat coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute of Virology and later misled Congress regarding his involvement.
In a video announcing the release, Gabbard said, “Today, on my final day as Director of National Intelligence, I’m releasing never-before-seen communications and documents exposing how Dr. Fauci provided millions in U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund dangerous gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab, worked with politicized elements within the Intelligence Community to suppress the truth about his actions and hide the virus’ lab-leak origins, and lied to Congress while under oath in 2024.”
According to the ODNI, the documents are the result of a yearlong declassification review conducted in support of President Donald Trump’s transparency initiative. The agency says the review uncovered evidence suggesting that dissenting views within the Intelligence Community were suppressed during investigations into the origins of COVID-19.
“The COVID-19 pandemic caused tremendous hardship and pain for millions of our fellow Americans and for countless people around the world,” Gabbard said in a statement released by her office. “After years of lies, censorship, and cover-ups, the American people deserve transparency, truth, and accountability.”
According to the ODNI, Fauci occupied several influential positions during the pandemic, including overseeing federal funding for coronavirus research, advising officials regarding the virus’s origins, and serving as one of the nation’s most visible public health spokespersons.
The agency alleges that Fauci’s testimony before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic in 2024 is contradicted by the newly released records. According to the ODNI, Fauci was asked whether he had communicated with intelligence agencies concerning viral research before, during, or after the pandemic and responded, “not to my knowledge about COVID.”
The ODNI now claims that declassified communications and testimony from intelligence officials show Fauci did participate in discussions involving intelligence personnel and viral research.
The agency also cited testimony from whistleblowers who claimed they faced retaliation for challenging official conclusions regarding COVID-19’s origins. According to the ODNI, some intelligence analysts who supported the possibility of a laboratory-related origin reported being marginalized, discouraged from expressing dissenting views, or warned that disagreement with leadership could harm their careers.
Among the examples cited by the agency was the allegation that a contractor was terminated shortly after coming forward as a whistleblower. The ODNI also stated that some managers allegedly signaled to analysts that promotion opportunities could be affected by their positions on the lab-leak hypothesis.
“The tactics used to hide the truth are straight from the deep state playbook,” Gabbard said. “Politicized self-serving leaders like Dr. Fauci covered up their own wrongdoing and abuses of power, manipulated intelligence, lied to Congress, and undermined a duly elected President.”
The allegations contained in the newly released records are likely to intensify ongoing scrutiny of the origins of COVID-19 and the federal government’s response to the pandemic. Questions surrounding gain-of-function research, federal grants connected to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and competing theories regarding the virus’s origin have remained subjects of controversy since the earliest days of the global outbreak.
As of publication, Fauci had not publicly responded to the specific allegations contained in the newly released ODNI documents.
The full collection of declassified materials has been made public by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and is expected to face close examination from lawmakers, scientists, intelligence officials, and the public in the weeks ahead.
