A family in Australia is celebrating what doctors are calling one of the rarest pregnancies ever documented after welcoming four identical baby girls conceived naturally from a single fertilized egg.
According to the New York Times, 34-year-old Jenitar Sau Na’amoana and her husband, Jortham, were not expecting to expand their family. Already parents to four children ranging in age from 1 to 10, they were stunned to learn they were expecting quadruplets. The surprise became even more extraordinary when specialists determined the babies were monozygotic quadruplets, meaning one fertilized egg naturally split into four embryos.
Doctors at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital said the pregnancy is believed to be extraordinarily uncommon. According to the New York Times, maternal fetal medicine specialist Dr. Alexa Bendall estimated that naturally conceived identical quadruplets occur in only about one in every 15 million pregnancies.
“We don’t think it’s ever happened in Australia,” Dr. Bendall said. “The fact that we’ve got four beautiful healthy babies born at 28 weeks and four days is incredible.”
Because the pregnancy carried significant risks, Ms. Na’amoana was admitted to the hospital at 25 weeks so her condition and the babies’ development could be closely monitored. According to the New York Times, she delivered the girls by cesarean section on July 14. The babies were named Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa, with the fourth daughter receiving her name in honor of Dr. Bendall.
Although they were born prematurely, the four sisters are reportedly doing well. According to The New York Times, they are receiving specialized care in a neonatal intensive care unit while they continue to grow and develop.
Reflecting on the outcome, Dr. Bendall expressed gratitude for the successful delivery.
“From a human perspective, to be able to be part of the family’s journey and come out with four beautiful babies and a healthy mum is very precious,” she said.
The family has also publicly shared its joy. In a social media post cited by The New York Times, Ms. Na’amoana described the experience as “one giant miracle.”
“Every day our miracle babies grow stronger is another answered prayer. We love you more than words can ever say, my miracle babies,” she wrote.
