A new English-language volume is giving Catholics around the world fresh access to the spiritual reflections of Pope Benedict XVI, collecting previously unpublished homilies delivered during private Masses over more than a decade.

Published by the Vatican Publishing House (LEV), The Lord Holds Us by the Hand gathers homilies preached by Pope Benedict XVI between 2005 and 2017 during the liturgical seasons of Advent, Lent, and Easter. According to Vatican News, the collection includes reflections delivered both during his pontificate and after his resignation as Pope Emeritus.

The homilies were originally given during private Masses attended by members of the papal household and invited guests. According to Vatican News, some were preached in the chapel of the Apostolic Palace, while others were delivered at the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery within Vatican City, where Benedict XVI lived following his resignation in 2013.

While the settings were private, the newly published texts offer a deeper look into the spiritual heart of one of the Church’s most influential theologians. According to Vatican News, the homilies reveal Benedict’s remarkable ability to draw new insights from Sacred Scripture and apply them to the daily lives of Christians.

A recurring theme throughout the collection is the centrality of Jesus Christ. Vatican News reports that the former pope consistently returned to the mystery of Christ’s presence in the life of believers, emphasizing that God accompanies and sustains His people throughout their earthly journey.

The book’s title reflects this message. According to Vatican News, Benedict repeatedly emphasized that “the Christian life is not a solitary path, but a journey guided by the presence and mercy of God.” The collection highlights the Christ-centered spirituality that defined both his theological writings and his pastoral ministry.

The volume was edited by Riccardo Bollati, Luca Caruso, and Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, former director of the Holy See Press Office. It also includes a preface by Archbishop Georg Gänswein, who served for many years as Benedict XVI’s personal secretary.

According to Vatican News, The Lord Holds Us by the Hand is only the first installment in a larger publishing project. A second volume featuring previously unpublished homilies from Ordinary Time is expected to be released in the future.

For Catholics who admired Pope Benedict XVI’s profound yet accessible teaching, the new publication offers a valuable opportunity to encounter once again the voice of the late pontiff, whose lifelong mission was to lead souls more deeply into a relationship with Jesus Christ.
