Catholic Priest Kidnapped, Beaten, and Burned During Three Days of Torture in Mexico

A Catholic priest in Mexico is recovering from a brutal kidnapping that left him with serious injuries and emotional trauma, prompting renewed calls from Church leaders for an end to the violence devastating communities across the country.

Father Clemente Morales Topete, a priest serving in the Diocese of Culiacán in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, was abducted by unidentified individuals on October 24 and held captive for three days. During his captivity, he was repeatedly beaten, burned, and threatened with death.

According to LifeSiteNews, Bishop José de Jesús Herrera Quiñones of Culiacán publicly addressed the incident in a November 1 statement, describing the violence inflicted upon the priest and the urgent need for greater protection of innocent civilians.

Father Morales returned to his parish on October 27, visibly injured and in need of immediate medical attention.

The bishop described his condition as “in a deplorable state, showing clear signs of the violence he had been subjected to.”

Parishioners quickly provided first aid before arranging for the priest to receive specialized medical treatment. Doctors attended to injuries caused by repeated blows and burns across multiple areas of his body.

Although the injuries were not immediately life-threatening, the bishop emphasized that the consequences extended beyond physical suffering.

According to the bishop, Father Morales also endured “the psychological and emotional impact of threats that the priest reported having received against his person.”

The priest’s health has since begun to improve, but Church officials acknowledge that his recovery will require continued medical attention, emotional support, and time.

Priest Threatened With Death During Captivity

Details released by the Diocese of Culiacán reveal that Father Morales was taken to an undisclosed location by individuals whose identities remain unknown.

During the ordeal, his captors reportedly demanded information that the priest did not possess.

The bishop explained that Father Morales “was held for three days, during which he received repeated death threats.”

The circumstances surrounding the kidnapping remain under investigation, and authorities have not publicly identified those responsible in the information reported.

Bishop Herrera expressed hope that investigators would establish the full circumstances of the crime and ensure that those responsible face justice.

A Region Struggling With Cartel Violence

The attack occurred in Culiacán, a city that has experienced widespread violence connected to rival factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

According to LifeSiteNews, the region has become a center of violent confrontations that have placed ordinary residents at risk of kidnapping, injury, and death.

The bishop stressed that Father Morales’ suffering reflects a much broader crisis affecting countless families throughout Sinaloa.

His kidnapping, the bishop said, “joins those of so many individuals and families who suffer from this reality.”

Church leaders have repeatedly emphasized the importance of protecting human life and defending the dignity of every person, particularly those made vulnerable by criminal violence.

In his statement, Bishop Herrera condemned the treatment of the priest and all similar acts of brutality.

“We denounce, reject, and condemn actions that threaten the life and the physical and moral well-being of individuals including physical and psychological torture and arbitrary detention because they are contrary to human dignity,” he declared.

The bishop also expressed concern that existing government security efforts have failed to bring lasting peace to the region.

He said the measures implemented so far have “not been sufficient” to “restore the tranquility that our city so desperately needs.”

He called for stronger efforts to prevent crime, protect communities, locate missing persons, assist victims, and ensure that those responsible for violent acts are held accountable.

Bishop Appeals to Criminals to Turn Away From Violence

Beyond calling for justice, Bishop Herrera delivered a direct spiritual appeal to those responsible for the violence affecting his community.

Rather than responding with hatred, he urged perpetrators to recognize the suffering they have caused and reconsider their actions.

“We ask you to reflect on the harm you are causing, to listen to the voice of your conscience, and to turn your gaze toward God. It is within your power to put an end to this violence,” the bishop said.

His appeal reflected the Church’s call to conversion, repentance, and respect for the dignity of human life, even amid profound suffering.

The bishop also encouraged residents to support victims of violence and their families, emphasizing that rebuilding peace requires cooperation throughout society.

Turning to Our Lady of the Rosary in Prayer

As Father Morales continues recovering, the Diocese of Culiacán is turning to prayer and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Bishop Herrera entrusted the people of the diocese to Our Lady of the Rosary, its patroness, asking for her protection over families affected by violence and those still searching for missing loved ones.

He prayed that the Blessed Mother would “accompany families searching for their loved ones, strengthen those who are suffering, and touch the hearts of those who have chosen the path of violence.”

For Catholics, the priest’s ordeal is a reminder of the suffering endured by innocent people in communities affected by organized crime, and of the importance of standing alongside those who face violence and persecution.

As Father Morales continues his recovery, the bishop’s message calls the faithful to pray not only for his healing, but also for the protection of vulnerable families, justice for victims, and lasting peace in Mexico.
