Pope Leo XIV has called on Catholic communities across the Arab world to remain steadfast in their Christian mission, urging bishops to respond to war, displacement and division by becoming witnesses of hope, reconciliation and faithful service.
Speaking Thursday to members of the Conference of Latin Bishops of the Arab Regions (CELRA) during their annual meeting in Rome, the Pope reflected on the difficult realities facing local Churches throughout the region.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo acknowledged that these Catholic communities often carry out their mission amid political, social and religious tensions. He also recalled the witness of priests, religious and lay Catholics who have given their lives for the faith in Iraq, Syria and other areas scarred by conflict.
The Pope urged bishops to remain especially close to their people, listening to them and sharing in their suffering as families face emigration and once-established communities become increasingly fragile.
Catholics do not need to be a majority, he suggested, for the Church to bear abundant spiritual fruit. What matters is fidelity to Christ and the Gospel.
“At the heart of societies marked by conflict and division,” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News, “may your communities show that it is possible to live, serve, and hope together.”
That witness, he said, is expressed concretely through the Church’s presence in parishes, schools and hospitals, where Catholics can welcome, listen to and support those in need.
Yet humanitarian crises must never cause the Church to forget the spiritual heart of her mission.
“Amid emergencies, do not lose sight of what is essential to the Church’s mission: the proclamation of the Gospel, prayer, the Sacraments and Christian formation,” Pope Leo said.
The Holy Father placed particular emphasis on families and young people, recognizing the difficulties and uncertainty they face. Young Catholics first receive the faith within their families, he said, while catechesis and the wider Christian community provide essential opportunities for teaching and listening.
The Pope also drew attention to migrants, particularly the many people living in Gulf countries far from their families and struggling with loneliness.
“May your communities be homes in which no one feels like a stranger,” Pope Leo said. “Defend the dignity of every person and recognize in every migrant a brother or sister: in this way, charity becomes a witness to the Gospel and a school of fraternity.”
His message also emphasized Christian unity across the region’s diverse Catholic traditions. Pope Leo described the variety of Christian traditions as a “treasure to be lived in unity” and encouraged greater communion among Churches of different rites.
That commitment to communion, he said, should extend outward through sincere engagement with other Christians and with Muslim communities.
“Dialogue does not mean renouncing one’s identity, but living it without fear of encounter,” Pope Leo said, according to Vatican News. “Wherever war has sown distrust, every gesture of esteem, cooperation, and respect can become a step towards reconciliation and peace.”
For Catholic communities surrounded by conflict and uncertainty, the Pope’s message ultimately centered not on worldly influence or institutional success, but on faithfulness to Christ.
“Do not seek success or recognition above all else: seek fidelity,” he told the bishops.
Pope Leo concluded by calling Church leaders to proclaim Christ through His Word, the Sacraments and prayer while remaining close to the people entrusted to their care.
“Be voices of truth, justice and peace; men of prayer, Pastors close to your people, artisans of reconciliation, and witnesses of mercy,” he said.
