What St. John Paul II Teaches Us About Living Without Fear

“Do not be afraid!”

These words, spoken by St. John Paul II at the beginning of his papacy in 1978, became one of the most recognizable messages of his extraordinary life.

Born Karol Wojtyła in Poland in 1920, the future pope experienced profound suffering from an early age. He lost his mother, brother, and father while still a young man and witnessed the devastation of Nazi occupation and communist oppression.

Yet through every trial, his faith in Jesus Christ remained the foundation of his life.

When he was elected pope in 1978, John Paul II brought that same unwavering confidence in Christ to the entire world.

He traveled across continents, encouraged millions of young people to embrace their Catholic faith, defended the dignity of human life, and tirelessly proclaimed the Gospel.

His message was clear. Christians should not allow fear to prevent them from following Jesus.

St. John Paul II understood that faith was not meant to remain hidden. It was meant to be lived, shared, and proclaimed with love and courage.

His commitment to young people was especially remarkable. Through the establishment of World Youth Day, he helped inspire generations of Catholics to deepen their relationship with Christ and recognize their calling to holiness.

He also understood the importance of Catholic education.

During his pontificate, the Catechism of the Catholic Church was promulgated, providing Catholics around the world with a comprehensive presentation of the Church’s faith and moral teaching.

Today, his mission of evangelization continues.

Families need trustworthy Catholic teaching. Young people need encouragement to live their faith. People searching for answers need access to resources that can help them encounter Jesus Christ.

This is why Catholic Online School exists.
