Pope Leo XIV is encouraging young Catholics to recognize Confirmation not simply as a milestone in their faith, but as a call to make the presence of the Holy Spirit visible in their everyday lives.
Speaking to recently confirmed young people from the Diocese of Chiavari during his Wednesday General Audience in St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pope emphasized the extraordinary gift Catholics receive through the sacrament.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo told the young people, “Dear young people, in Confirmation you have received the most beautiful gift, the Holy Spirit: it is not a treasure to be kept hidden, but a light that you must make shine every day.”
His words offered a simple but powerful challenge to the confirmands: the grace received in Confirmation is meant to bear fruit beyond the day of the sacrament.
Catholics are called to live their faith openly and allow the Holy Spirit to guide their daily witness.
The young pilgrims from Chiavari attended the audience accompanied by their bishop. Pope Leo also extended his greetings to young people, the sick and newlyweds, according to Vatican News.
During his remarks, the Holy Father also turned attention to Saints Monica and Augustine, whose liturgical commemorations fall on Thursday and Friday.
The mother and son, Pope Leo observed, were united on earth “by family ties” and are now united “in heaven, by the same destiny of glory.”
Their lives provide a particularly fitting example of perseverance in faith and the search for God. Saint Monica is remembered for her steadfast devotion, while Saint Augustine became one of the Church’s great saints and teachers.
“May their example,” Pope Leo said, “inspire in each of you a sincere and passionate search for the Truth of the Gospel, so that you may bear witness to it joyfully in your daily lives.”
The Pope’s message connected the gift of the Holy Spirit with the responsibility of Christian witness. For young Catholics beginning a new chapter after Confirmation, his words serve as a reminder that the sacrament is not an ending, but a call to bring the light of faith into the world each day.
