Bishop Athanasius Schneider of Astana, Kazakhstan, has expressed deep concern about what he describes as a widespread crisis of faith among some members of the Church’s leadership, warning that confusion in doctrine, morals, and liturgy has had serious consequences for the life of the Church.
Speaking in an interview with Catholic writer and podcaster Matt Gaspers, Schneider said that a significant number of influential clergy over recent decades have departed from authentic Catholic belief. According to LifeSiteNews, the bishop stated, “They want another Church: half-Protestant Church, half worldly, adapted to the impression of the world.”
Schneider argued that some Church leaders have sought to reshape Catholicism in order to align it more closely with modern cultural trends. According to LifeSiteNews, he said these individuals have worked to “adapt it completely to the world” and create “a new religion which is relativistic, a kind of syncretism.”
The bishop pointed to developments over the last sixty years, a period that coincides with the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. Schneider has frequently voiced concerns about what he sees as ambiguous language in certain conciliar documents and the effects he believes have followed in the decades since.
While acknowledging that it can be difficult to identify specific clergy who may hold such views, Schneider said the results are visible throughout the Church. According to LifeSiteNews, he described the current situation as producing “a tremendous general confusion, obfuscation, darkness regarding doctrine, morals, and liturgy.”
During the discussion, Schneider and Gaspers examined ongoing debates surrounding the council and its interpretation. Particular attention was given to the relationship between the Vatican and the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), a traditionalist priestly society founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.
The conversation referenced recent comments by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández regarding the acceptance of Vatican II as a condition for full recognition of the SSPX’s status within the Church. Schneider noted that similar expectations had been presented by previous pontiffs.
According to LifeSiteNews, Schneider argued that requiring Catholics to affirm complete harmony between all aspects of Vatican II and prior Church teaching can be problematic. He described such a requirement as an “exercise of mental acrobatics” and said it could amount to “violence to your reason.”
The bishop also criticized what he described as doctrinal innovations advanced in recent years, arguing that they have often been presented as developments flowing from the council. He maintained that the resulting confusion raises serious questions about the interpretation and application of certain conciliar teachings.
Reflecting on the fruits produced by ambiguity in matters of faith, Schneider posed a pointed question: “If the fruit are only confusion, ambiguity — how can ambiguity [be] the voice of the Holy Spirit?” according to LifeSiteNews.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of clarity in proclaiming the Catholic faith, stating, “No one gives his life for something which is ambiguous.”
Schneider’s remarks come amid continuing discussions within the Church regarding the interpretation of Vatican II, the preservation of Catholic doctrine, and efforts to strengthen unity while remaining faithful to the Church’s sacred tradition.
