A new scientific investigation near Mount Ararat has uncovered pottery fragments, unusual underground features and hundreds of soil samples, adding fresh intrigue to a site long associated with the biblical account of Noah’s Ark.
Researchers recently completed their 2026 field season at the Durupınar Formation in eastern Türkiye, a distinctive boat-shaped geological formation near Mount Ararat that has attracted interest for decades.
According to Arkeonews, an international team led by Prof. Dr. Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University spent approximately 90 days investigating the formation near Doğubayazıt in Ağrı Province. About 20 researchers representing five countries participated in the project.
Among the discoveries were pottery fragments that researchers believe could come from a period preceding the flood described in religious tradition. However, their age has not yet been established through laboratory testing.
The team also collected approximately 1,000 soil samples from 150 locations across the formation, according to Arkeonews. Ground-penetrating radar was used to identify areas for sampling, while GPS measurements and detailed two- and three-dimensional mapping were used to document the site.
Core samples have now been sent to Ankara for laboratory examination. Researchers plan to look closely for organic material and possible wood remains.
The investigation follows intriguing radar results reported earlier this year.
According to Arkeonews, underground imaging detected possible voids and other anomalies beneath the formation, including features with relatively regular edges. Some appeared to intersect at right angles.
Researchers have suggested that such patterns could potentially represent compartments or other structural features, but their origin remains unknown.
Another finding has drawn attention as scientists examine what may lie beneath the surface.
According to Sivas Cumhuriyet University, carbon levels measured in samples taken from inside the formation were approximately 40 percent higher than levels measured outside it. Atila suggested that the elevated carbon could be connected to organic material, potentially including wood.
None of these findings establishes that the Durupınar Formation is Noah’s Ark. The newly collected material must still undergo scientific analysis, and researchers have not determined whether the underground anomalies are geological or connected to a human-made structure.
For Christians, however, the location naturally carries special interest because of the account recorded in Genesis.
Scripture says that after the waters of the Flood began to recede, “the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat” (Genesis 8:4). The biblical wording refers to the mountains or region of Ararat rather than identifying the modern peak itself.
The latest investigation is therefore significant not because it has proven the discovery of the Ark, but because researchers are gathering physical evidence that can be subjected to laboratory testing.
Scientists intend to examine the composition of the samples, search for organic remains and conduct radiocarbon dating where suitable material is available. According to Arkeonews, Atila expects important laboratory findings during the winter of 2026–2027.
Sivas Cumhuriyet University plans to continue the broader research program through 2027. Findings from the first year are expected to be published in a volume titled “Durupınar Formation 2026 Research” and presented in three international conference papers.
Whether the formation ultimately proves to be entirely geological or reveals evidence of ancient human activity remains an open question. For now, the pottery, unusual radar readings and hundreds of samples collected beneath the formation have given researchers new evidence to examine — and ensured that the centuries-old fascination with Noah’s Ark and Mount Ararat will continue.
