A powerful moment during Mass in Minnesota has drawn widespread attention after a Catholic priest became visibly overwhelmed while consecrating the Precious Blood, prompting him to clarify what he experienced and what he did not.
Father Brent Bowman was celebrating Mass on Sept. 14 for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Hopkins, Minnesota. Students, faculty and staff from Chesterton Academy, along with parishioners, were present.
During the Eucharistic Prayer, Father Bowman became emotional while pronouncing the words of consecration over the wine. Video from the Mass shows him struggling to continue speaking and, for a time, appearing unable to lift the chalice.
As footage of the moment spread online, speculation emerged that Father Bowman had witnessed a physical transformation of the Eucharistic species. In a Sept. 16 statement, however, the priest explicitly rejected that interpretation.
“To clarify up front, my experience was NOT what the Catholic Church considers a ‘Eucharistic miracle,’” Father Bowman said in a statement published by the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. “The forms of bread and wine retained their accidents (i.e., their appearance and taste) during this entire experience. Never did I see real blood or human flesh with my eyes.”
Instead, according to LifeSiteNews, Father Bowman described what he believes was an interior spiritual experience that gave him a profound awareness of what was taking place during the consecration.
“As I spoke the words, I was given what I believe to be internal knowledge of the power of these words being spoken and the reality of their effect to the point that I had difficulty speaking,” he said.
Father Bowman said the experience became increasingly physical as he held the chalice.
“At the same time, I was given sensory knowledge of the weight of God’s power coming down upon the altar, and I felt the heaviness of Jesus’s substantial presence in the chalice in my hands,” he said.
According to Father Bowman, the chalice felt so heavy that he could no longer hold it normally. He said he felt it being pulled toward the altar and experienced his hands as being fixed to it, leaving him temporarily unable to elevate the Precious Blood.
The experience, he said, brought his attention particularly to Christ’s Passion and the sacrifice represented by the Precious Blood.
“I believe I was given grace to understand more deeply the bittersweetness of Our Lord’s Passion and how much blood Christ shed for the immense weight of all our sins,” Father Bowman said. “I believe I experienced this weight in the chalice.”
Earlier accounts of the incident had also emphasized this understanding. According to Catholic writer Patrick O’Hearn, who cited St. Gabriel pastor Father Paul Haverstock, Father Bowman received “experiential knowledge of knowing on a deeper level that truly Christ’s blood was shed for us and that its weight is profound.”
Father Bowman stressed that such a private spiritual experience should not be interpreted as evidence of his personal holiness. He described encounters of this kind as “completely unmerited gifts and signs of God’s abundant love for all his people.”
The priest ultimately directed attention away from himself and toward the mystery at the heart of the Mass.
“I pray this brief testimony moves all our hearts to contemplate more deeply the mysteries of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and the Precious Blood,” Father Bowman said.
Catholic teaching holds that at the consecration, through transubstantiation, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ while their outward appearances remain. Father Bowman’s clarification makes clear that he is not claiming that those appearances changed during the September 14 Mass.
Instead, his testimony describes a deeply personal spiritual encounter with a reality Catholics profess at every Mass: that Jesus Christ is truly, really and substantially present in the Holy Eucharist.
