A striking demographic shift in Vienna’s schools is raising questions that extend far beyond Austria — including a question Catholics around the world cannot afford to ignore: Who is forming the next generation?
According to LifeSiteNews, Muslim students now constitute the largest religious group in Vienna’s public compulsory schools. During the 2025–26 school year, approximately 42 percent of pupils in those schools are Muslim, while Catholics account for roughly 16.7 percent.
The difference is even more pronounced in Vienna’s middle schools, where Muslim students make up 49.4 percent of pupils, according to figures cited by LifeSiteNews from Austrian newspaper Die Presse.
When Austrian journalist Michael Fleischhacker recently asked Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the retired archbishop of Vienna, whether the development worried him, the cardinal offered a remarkably concise response.
“Whoever has the children, has the future. That’s my simple answer,” Schönborn said, according to LifeSiteNews.
Those words deserve the attention of Catholics far beyond Vienna.
The situation is somewhat different in Catholic and other private schools. LifeSiteNews reports that Catholics represent 45.4 percent of students in those institutions, compared with 10.5 percent Orthodox Christians and 7.6 percent Muslims. But private schools educate only about 11 percent of Vienna’s students.
Across public and private schools combined, Muslim students remain the largest single religious group at 38.3 percent, while Catholic and Orthodox Christian students together account for 33.6 percent, according to Austrian publication Heute, as cited in the report.
Catholic philosopher Edward Feser responded to Schönborn’s observation by focusing not only on immigration, but also on the collapse of Christian family life and fertility.
Those “who practice contraception have no business complaining about becoming a minority in their own country,” Feser wrote, according to LifeSiteNews. “Their grave violation of ancient Christian morality is the primary cause of the situation. Immigration is secondary.”
Feser added that liberal immigration policies had “greatly exacerbated the situation,” but argued that Christians themselves must confront the consequences of abandoning historic Christian teaching on marriage, family and openness to life.
The demographic question is significant. But for Catholics, there is another dimension that cannot be measured simply by counting students.
Having children is not the same thing as forming disciples.
Every child is being formed — by parents, teachers, friends, entertainment, social media, algorithms, artificial intelligence and the broader culture surrounding them.
The real question is whether the Catholic Church will be present in that formation.

His words point toward a difficult reality.
Christianity cannot simply be inherited culturally and expected to survive.
The Catholic Faith must be taught. It must be practiced. It must be witnessed. And it must be handed on deliberately.
Pope St. Paul VI reaffirmed the Church’s teaching on marriage and openness to life in the 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae. Decades later, Catholics face not only the demographic consequences of smaller families throughout much of the Western world, but also the spiritual consequences of generations growing up increasingly disconnected from Christian belief.
That makes Catholic formation an urgent missionary responsibility.
If Catholics believe that the future begins with children, then supporting their formation cannot be treated as someone else’s responsibility.
