Middle East Conflict Could Push 23 Million More Children Into Poverty, UNICEF Warns

More than 150 Catholic priests from across southern Peru recently traded vestments for soccer jerseys, gathering not simply to compete for a championship but to strengthen fraternity, encourage vocations, and witness to the joy of the priesthood through sport.

According to EWTN News, priests representing the dioceses of Puno, Cusco, Abancay, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Huancayo, and Tarma met on July 2 for the 2026 Clergy Champions tournament, an annual event that has grown into a cherished tradition throughout the Peruvian Andes.

The championship concluded with a dramatic final between Huancavelica and Cusco. After regulation ended in a draw, the title was decided in a penalty shootout. Huancavelica’s goalkeeper stopped Cusco’s final attempt before Father Santiago Salazar calmly converted the winning penalty, securing the championship for his diocese and sending players, seminarians, and spectators into celebration.

According to the report, reported on by Vatican News, one scenario projects that approximately 18.3 million additional children could fall into monetary poverty under a moderate economic downturn. A more severe scenario, assuming longer-lasting disruptions and greater economic instability, raises that figure to 23.4 million children.

Russell warned that the consequences could extend well beyond immediate financial hardship.

“Rapidly rising costs are making food and education unaffordable for many families,” she said. “For children already living in poverty, these shocks deepen deprivation and can cause harm that lasts a lifetime.”

UNICEF is urging governments, international financial institutions, and donor nations to strengthen protections for children by preserving funding for healthcare, nutrition, education, and child protection programs. The agency also recommends expanding social protection programs, maintaining affordable access to essential services, and providing greater financial flexibility for countries struggling with heavy debt burdens.

The organization also called for stronger preparedness systems that can deliver assistance quickly when future economic shocks occur.

Russell cautioned that failing to respond could have lasting consequences for an entire generation.

“This crisis is putting the lives and futures of children at risk,” she said. “If the world fails to act swiftly, the combined effects of conflict, economic instability and rising costs will push millions of children into deeper poverty. We could see hard-earned development gains unravel.”

For Catholics, the warning serves as a reminder of the Church’s enduring call to care for the poor, defend the dignity of every child, and pray and work for peace. As conflict continues to affect families across the globe, the needs of the world’s most vulnerable children remain an urgent concern for the international community.
