Spielberg Says New UFO Film Includes the Catholic Church’s Perspective on Extraterrestrial Life

As public interest in UFOs and unexplained aerial phenomena continues to grow, acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg says his newest movie will examine how the discovery of extraterrestrial life could affect religious belief and society.

Speaking during an interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, Spielberg discussed his upcoming film Disclosure Day, which follows a meteorologist and a cybersecurity expert investigating alleged government secrecy surrounding extraterrestrial phenomena. According to The Christian Post, Spielberg said the film explores the potential consequences of a sudden government confirmation that extraterrestrial life exists.

“There’s a faction in the film that represents a pretty good position of why — possibly because of ontological shock, social dislocation — if this truth… were just known overnight, if the government announced, ‘Yes, we have been keeping this from you since 1947,’ that would mess up a lot of people,” Spielberg said.

The director noted that one of the film’s central characters is a former Roman Catholic nun and suggested that the movie addresses questions that many religious believers might ask if extraterrestrial life were ever confirmed.

According to The Christian Post, Spielberg said the film “also takes the position of the [Catholic] Church” while exploring broader theological questions.

“What does this do to the fundamental beliefs that many of us have?” Spielberg asked. “Is God, our God, only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there’s civilization, intelligent life and even developing life?”

Comments from the interview quickly generated discussion online, particularly among Christian commentators who rejected the idea that the existence of extraterrestrial life would necessarily undermine Christian faith.

Christian podcaster Josh Daws responded, “No it won’t. Hollywood is obsessed with the idea that the discovery of aliens will rock Christian faith. It’s weird.”

Eric Sammons, editor-in-chief of Crisis Magazine, likewise dismissed the notion that extraterrestrial life would present a theological crisis for believers.

“The only people who think the existence of aliens would mess with Christianity are non-Christians who don’t understand the first thing about Christianity,” Sammons said.

The discussion comes at a time when questions surrounding UFOs, unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs), and their possible spiritual significance have become increasingly common in both secular and religious circles.

Recent debate intensified following the removal of Monsignor Stephen J. Rossetti as an exorcist in the Archdiocese of Washington after public comments regarding UFO phenomena. According to The Christian Post, Rossetti had stated that “probably many, if not most, of these UFO sightings are, in fact, demons.”

Similar views have been expressed by other Catholic clergy, including Father Chad Ripperger, an exorcist serving in the Archdiocese of Denver.

The article also noted that some occult figures have historically associated UFO phenomena with spiritual or occult practices. Interest in the subject has continued to grow among religious leaders, government officials, and media personalities as additional reports and government documents related to unidentified aerial phenomena have been released in recent years.

For Catholics, the question of extraterrestrial life remains largely speculative. The Church has never formally taught that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, nor has it ruled out the possibility. Catholic theology affirms that God is the Creator of all things visible and invisible, leaving room for inquiry while emphasizing that any future discoveries must ultimately be understood within the truth of God’s plan for creation.

Disclosure Day is scheduled for release in theaters on Friday.
