Holy See Affirms Sacred Dignity of People with Down Syndrome, Calls for Rejection of Eugenic Practices

As the world marks World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, the Holy See is once again urging society to recognize the full dignity and value of every human life, especially those with genetic conditions often misunderstood or marginalized.

Speaking at a United Nations-related event in Geneva, Archbishop Ettore Balestrero emphasized that people with Down syndrome are not defined by limitations or diagnoses, but by their inherent worth as human beings. He reminded those present that, “Persons with Down syndrome are more than a diagnosis, more than a condition, and certainly more than the limits others may imagine,” adding that “all of them, like all of us, possess the same inherent dignity and sacred value, intentionally and lovingly imprinted by the Creator from the very first moment of conception,” according to Vatican News.

His remarks came during a gathering connected to World Down Syndrome Day 2026, which highlights the importance of inclusion and respect for individuals with genetic differences. The Archbishop stressed that recognizing this dignity must go beyond words or policies and instead shape how communities truly welcome and support every person.

He explained that inclusion is not simply about providing services, but about seeing individuals with Down syndrome as full members of society. As he noted, they “hold the same fundamental rights” as every other person, according to Vatican News.

At the heart of his message was a clear moral warning against practices that undermine the value of life before birth. Archbishop Balestrero called on the international community to reject what he described as “discriminatory and eugenic practices linked to prenatal screening and the selective termination of pregnancies targeting babies diagnosed with Down syndrome,” insisting that such actions must be firmly opposed, according to Vatican News.

His words echo the Church’s consistent teaching on the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. Rather than measuring a person’s worth by ability, productivity, or perceived quality of life, the Archbishop pointed to a deeper truth rooted in love and human dignity.

Referencing the teaching of Pope Leo XIV, he underscored that the value of life is not determined by achievements, but by love itself. Even the most advanced systems of care, he warned, can fail if they lack compassion, noting that a system “may be operationally perfect, but if it is heartless, it becomes cold and impersonal,” according to Vatican News.

He also expressed gratitude for families, caregivers, and professionals who dedicate their lives to supporting individuals with Down syndrome, recognizing their work as a vital witness to the dignity of every human person.

Concluding his appeal, Archbishop Balestrero called for a renewed commitment to building a culture that embraces life in all its forms. He urged society to ensure that every person with Down syndrome is “recognized as unique and unrepeatable, and welcomed with equal dignity and respect,” according to Vatican News.

In a world often driven by efficiency and perfection, the Holy See’s message stands as a powerful reminder: every life is sacred, every person is willed by God, and every individual—regardless of ability—belongs fully within the human family.
