Every Baptized Soul Is Sent Anew Pope Leo XIV Calls the Faithful to Live and Proclaim Christ

At his weekly General Audience, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful reminder that the Christian life is never passive. Rooted in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, the Holy Father emphasized that every Catholic—without exception—shares in the Church’s mission to evangelize.

Reflecting on Lumen gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, the Pope underscored the dignity and responsibility given through Baptism. “Every baptized person is an active agent of evangelization, called to bear consistent witness to Christ in accordance with the prophetic gift which the Lord bestows upon His whole Church,” he said, according to Vatican News.

This call is not reserved for clergy or religious alone. The Pope explained that through Baptism, all the faithful are drawn into what the Council described as a “royal priesthood.” This shared identity unites both the ordained and the laity in one mission: to carry forward Christ’s saving work in the world.

The Holy Father pointed to the sacraments as the foundation of this mission. Baptism initiates believers into the life of grace, while Confirmation strengthens them for witness. As he noted, those who are confirmed are “more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith, both by word and by deed, as true witnesses of Christ,” according to Vatican News.

But this mission is not lived in isolation. The Pope highlighted the Church as the People of God—a living communion guided by the Holy Spirit. Within this body, the faithful share in Christ’s prophetic role, participating in what the Church calls the sensus fidei, or “sense of the faith.” This spiritual instinct allows believers, united with their pastors, to recognize and remain faithful to the truth handed down through the ages.

Quoting the Council’s teaching, the Pope recalled that “the entire body of the faithful… cannot err in matters of belief” when united in faith and morals, according to Vatican News. This unity is safeguarded by the Church’s Magisterium and animated by the Holy Spirit.

The Christian life, therefore, becomes a daily offering. The Pope explained that this “royal priesthood” is exercised through participation in the Eucharist, prayer, self-denial, and acts of charity. In these ways, believers bear witness to lives transformed by grace.

He also pointed to the many ways the Holy Spirit continues to build up the Church today. From consecrated religious life to lay movements and ecclesial associations, the Spirit distributes gifts that renew and strengthen the People of God. These charisms, the Pope said, make the faithful “fit and ready to undertake the various tasks and offices which contribute toward the renewal and building up of the Church,” according to Vatican News.

In closing, Pope Leo XIV urged Catholics to rediscover both the gift and the responsibility of belonging to the Church. “Let us rekindle in ourselves the awareness of and gratitude for having received the gift of being part of God’s People, and also the responsibility that this entails,” he said, according to Vatican News.

His message is clear: to be baptized is to be sent. Every Catholic is called not only to believe in Christ, but to live and proclaim Him—faithfully, courageously, and without compromise.
