‘The World Is Preparing for 2030’: Church Leaders Unveil Major Jubilee Plans at Jesus’ Baptism Site

Christians around the world may soon witness one of the most significant spiritual commemorations in modern history as preparations begin for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Jesus Christ.

According to EWTN News, Church leaders gathered May 18 at the sacred site traditionally known as “Bethany Beyond the Jordan,” where Jesus was baptized by St. John the Baptist. The meeting, hosted by King Abdullah II of Jordan, focused on plans for the Baptism Jubilee in 2030 — an international celebration expected to draw pilgrims from across the globe.

Among those speaking at the event was Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, who reminded believers that Christ’s baptism is not simply a moment remembered from the past.

“The baptism of Christ is not merely a historical memory but an eternal event that continues to speak to every believer,” he said, according to EWTN News.

The holy site, located along the eastern bank of the Jordan River opposite Jericho, has long been honored by Christians as the place where Jesus entered the waters and began His public ministry. In 2015, UNESCO officially recognized the location as a World Heritage Site because of its immense spiritual and historical importance.

King Abdullah announced that Jordan will officially support and oversee preparations for the 2030 jubilee. The initiative will include infrastructure improvements and expanded services for pilgrims while preserving the sacred atmosphere of the site.

“This initiative is a call to look forward with faith and responsibility,” Cardinal Pizzaballa said. “The baptism site must remain a living place, where visitors do not simply come to see but encounter God and rediscover the depth of their baptism.”

Church leaders described the upcoming jubilee as far more than an anniversary celebration. According to EWTN News, they see it as a worldwide spiritual invitation for Christians to renew their baptismal promises, deepen their faith, and rediscover hope in a troubled world.

Leaders also emphasized the need for cooperation among Christian communities worldwide to prepare for the expected influx of pilgrims. Plans include developing facilities, training workers and volunteers, and ensuring the sacred location remains centered on prayer and living faith rather than tourism alone.

Cardinal Pizzaballa also praised Jordan’s efforts to protect Christian holy sites and promote peace throughout the region.

“In this blessed land,” he said, “we see in your leadership a living example of how faith can become a bridge between peoples and a foundation for peace in the world.”

The site itself carries extraordinary meaning for Christians. Scripture refers to the area as “Bethany Beyond the Jordan,” where St. John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. Christians believe Christ sanctified the waters through His baptism and revealed the beginning of His saving mission.

Ancient churches, monasteries, and archaeological remains throughout the area testify to centuries of Christian devotion. Today, pilgrims from around the world continue traveling there for prayer, reflection, and liturgical celebrations.

As preparations move forward, Church leaders hope the 2030 jubilee will become a powerful witness of Christian unity, peace, and renewal — transforming the baptism site into a global beacon of reconciliation and faith for a new generation.
