Poland to Build One of the World’s Tallest Virgin Mary Statues

Poland is set to unveil one of the tallest Marian monuments in the world, as billionaire Roman Karkosik and his wife plan to construct a massive 180-foot (55-meter) statue of the Virgin Mary near the town of Kikola. This towering tribute will far exceed the height of Brazil’s iconic Christ the Redeemer, which stands at 98 feet (30 meters).

According to Metro UK, the project has already begun, with demolition work at the construction site underway. Permission for the statue was granted in October 2023, and it is expected to be completed sometime in 2026. Renata Golebiewska, the mayor of Kikola, confirmed that “in 2023, the Kikol City and Commune Office received an application for issuing development conditions for the construction of a viewing area with a statue of the Virgin Mary, along with a social and technical building and land development.”

The statue will feature a 50-foot crown, while the figure of Mary herself will stand at 131 feet, with her hands open and her head slightly tilted downward. A pedestal will serve as a panoramic viewing terrace, offering visitors a unique experience of both the statue and the surrounding landscape.

Karkosik, one of Poland’s wealthiest individuals, is best known as the founder and majority shareholder of Boryszew, a major industrial group. His net worth was estimated at $1.8 billion in 2007, Metro UK reports. While the exact cost of the project remains undisclosed, the statue is seen as both a tribute to Kikola, where Karkosik and his wife reside, and a future place of pilgrimage and reflection.

This monumental endeavor aligns with Poland’s strong Catholic identity, where devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary has deep historical and spiritual significance. From the revered Black Madonna of Częstochowa to grand Marian shrines across the country, Poland has long been a center of Marian devotion.

As construction progresses, Catholics around the world may look forward to a new place of prayer and pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady. With its towering presence, this statue may soon stand as one of the most striking tributes to the Mother of God in modern times.
