The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has collapsed, leading to renewed destruction across Gaza. Overnight, Israeli warplanes launched more than 30 airstrikes, hitting heavily populated areas and worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, “over 330 people” have been killed, with dozens more wounded, as reported by Vatican News. Many of the strikes targeted Khan Younis, where makeshift shelters housing displaced families were reduced to rubble. Hospitals are now overwhelmed, with medical supplies critically low.

Israeli officials defended the airstrikes, citing national security concerns. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that military operations would continue “until every objective of the war is achieved,” according to Vatican News. Katz reaffirmed Israel’s stance, saying, “We will not stop fighting until every objective of the war is achieved.” The Israeli government claims the airstrikes were necessary due to “unusual activity” in Gaza.

Hamas has condemned the renewed offensive, calling Netanyahu’s actions “a death sentence for the prisoners.” A senior Hamas official accused the Israeli leader of using the war as a distraction from Israel’s internal political crises, a statement that has fueled growing unrest within Israel itself. Meanwhile, The Families Forum, Israel’s largest group representing the relatives of hostages, has called on Netanyahu to “stop killing” their loved ones, urging an immediate meeting with him to address their concerns.

As the White House continues to express unwavering support for Israel, Pope Francis has once again spoken out against the ongoing violence. While recovering in a hospital, the Holy Father lamented the horrors of war, calling it “absurd” and urging global leaders to “disarm the Earth.” His plea resonates deeply with the Catholic call for peace and reconciliation, reminding the faithful that war only deepens human suffering.

The conflict, which reignited on October 7, 2023, has led to devastating casualties. According to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, the death toll in Gaza has reached “45,000” since the outbreak of hostilities. With innocent lives caught in the crossfire, the world watches in sorrow, hoping for an end to the bloodshed.

For Catholics around the world, this moment calls for fervent prayer and action. Inspired by Pope Francis’ appeal, we must continue to advocate for peace, support humanitarian efforts, and stand in solidarity with all those suffering in this war. May the Prince of Peace guide world leaders to seek justice through dialogue, not destruction.
