Pope Leo XIV Launches Major Vatican Effort to Renew Padre Pio’s Beloved Hospital

Pope Leo XIV has established a new Vatican commission to oversee the renewal and long-term sustainability of the famous “House for the Relief of Suffering,” the hospital founded by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina in southern Italy.

According to Vatican News, the Holy Father signed a chirograph — a papal decree — creating a “Commission for Direction and Oversight” for the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Foundation in San Giovanni Rotondo. The hospital, born from Padre Pio’s vision of Christian charity and care for the suffering, is now entering what Vatican officials describe as a new phase of renewal and restructuring.

The Vatican stated that the commission’s mission is to “identify the best solutions for ever greater efficiency, effectiveness, and long-term sustainability of its work and mission,” according to Vatican News.

The move comes as the hospital faces serious financial difficulties. According to EWTN News, the hospital’s debts are estimated between 250 million and 300 million euros — roughly $290 million to $350 million. The facility is also reportedly involved in disputes with regional authorities in Puglia over reimbursements and labor contract issues.

Despite those challenges, Vatican officials emphasized that the hospital’s spiritual mission remains unchanged.

“The evolution of the times, of technology, of law, and of the economy,” the pope’s chirograph states, “places the Church’s mission before the challenge of continuous renewal,” especially in healthcare, which requires “vision, investment, and prudent management,” according to Vatican News.

The papal decree notes that Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza was founded “with the purpose of offering hospitality, assistance, and care to the sick, to pilgrims, and to their families, inspired by the spirituality and figure of its holy founder.”

For Catholics around the world, the hospital stands as one of the most visible legacies of Padre Pio’s life of compassion and sacrifice. The Capuchin friar, canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II, believed deeply that care for the suffering was part of the Gospel itself.

Vatican News described the hospital as flowing from “Padre Pio’s concrete faith, convinced that caring for the body was an integral part of the Christian mission.”

The new commission will have broad authority to act in financial, operational, and administrative matters. According to the decree, it will report directly to Pope Leo XIV before major decisions are finalized or before any changes are made that could significantly affect the institution’s assets or statutes.

Leading the commission will be Maximino Caballero Ledo, prefect of the Vatican Secretariat for the Economy. Fabio Gasperini will coordinate the effort, alongside senior Vatican officials including Archbishop Paolo Rudelli and Archbishop Giordano Piccinotti.

The Vatican also appointed a technical committee that includes Dr. Benjamín Estévez de Cominges, Dr. Gino Gumirato, and attorney Alessandro Ela Oyana.

According to EWTN News, the creation of this new commission is notable because Pope Francis had already established a Vatican commission for Catholic healthcare during his pontificate. The decision signals Pope Leo XIV’s personal interest in safeguarding one of the Church’s most recognized works of mercy.

The Vatican framed the relaunch not simply as a financial restructuring, but as an act of fidelity to Padre Pio’s original mission.

Vatican News said the effort reflects “the same care with which the saint of Pietrelcina wanted no sick person, pilgrim, or family member to be left without welcome and assistance.”

Today, thousands continue to pass through the hospital’s doors seeking healing, medical care, and hope — the very mission Padre Pio envisioned decades ago.
