Pope Francis is showing gradual signs of improvement as he continues to recover from a polymicrobial infection that led to bilateral pneumonia, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office.
The Holy Father was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday, March 23, with what officials called a “protected discharge.” Since returning to his residence at Casa Santa Marta, he has been undergoing physical therapy for respiratory and mobility issues. Officials noted the Pope can now go extended periods without oxygen, requiring high-flow oxygen only in the evenings or when necessary.
Pope Francis has resumed his work duties and continues to meet with key Vatican collaborators, including Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, who visited to discuss the promulgation of decrees for causes of saints.
As for the upcoming Holy Week observances, Vatican officials said it remains too early to confirm the Pope’s participation in the Triduum or other liturgies. However, the Pope has authored the Meditations for this year’s Good Friday Via Crucis at the Colosseum, which will be released at noon on Friday.
In the Pope’s absence, several cardinals have been delegated to preside over Holy Week services:
- Holy Thursday Morning (Chrism Mass): Cardinal Domenico Calcagno
- Holy Thursday Evening (Mass in Coena Domini): To be held in St. Peter’s Basilica at 6 p.m., not in a papal chapel
- Good Friday Passion Liturgy: Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti
- Good Friday Via Crucis at the Colosseum: Cardinal Baldo Reina
The Vatican is expected to release further updates in a scheduled Friday briefing.
