Pope Francis remains in stable but complex condition as he continues treatment at Gemelli Hospital, according to updates provided by the Holy See Press Office. Despite ongoing respiratory challenges, the Holy Father has maintained his spiritual and pastoral commitments while receiving medical care.

Medical Condition and Treatment

The Vatican’s statement on Monday confirmed that Pope Francis “had a quiet night, and is resting.” He continues to undergo therapies, including respiratory and motor physiotherapy, while transitioning between non-invasive mechanical ventilation at night and high-flow oxygen therapy during the day, “using nasal cannulas.” His clinical status is stable but remains serious enough that doctors are maintaining a guarded prognosis (Holy See Press Office, March 10, 2025).

Sunday’s update also highlighted small but positive signs in his health: “His condition appears stable, with slight gradual improvements,” though the medical team remains cautious (Holy See Press Office, March 9, 2025). As part of his treatment plan, he has resumed eating solid foods and continues following a prescribed diet.

Commitment to Prayer and Spiritual Exercises

Although physically unable to attend in person, Pope Francis has continued participating in the Spiritual Exercises of the Roman Curia, which began on Sunday in the Paul VI Hall. The meditations are being led by Fr. Roberto Pasolini, OFM Cap., and the Pope “joined spiritually with those participating” via video link (Holy See Press Office, March 9, 2025).

The Vatican also announced that these spiritual exercises will be available live on Vatican News at 5 PM Rome time on Monday, followed by a Rosary prayer for the Pope’s health at 6 PM.

Visits and Pastoral Engagement

Pope Francis has remained engaged with his Vatican staff and global concerns. On Sunday, he received visits from Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Substitute for the Secretariat of State. He also celebrated Mass with those assisting him during his hospitalization (Holy See Press Office, March 9, 2025).

Despite his health challenges, the Pope has expressed deep concern for those suffering worldwide. Upon learning of devastating floods in Argentina, which claimed at least 16 lives in Bahia Blanca, he offered prayers and his “closeness to those affected.”

Gratitude for Medical Staff

In his Angelus address, Pope Francis reflected on the care he has received, saying, “During my prolonged hospitalization here, I too experience the thoughtfulness of service and the tenderness of care, in particular from the doctors and healthcare workers, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart” (Holy See Press Office, March 9, 2025).

A medical bulletin is expected on Monday evening, as previous updates were withheld due to his stable condition. The faithful around the world continue to pray for his full recovery, trusting in God’s providence for the Holy Father’s health.
