Pope Francis’ Health Remains Stable After Respiratory Episodes

Pope Francis is continuing to recover following two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency on Monday, according to the Holy See Press Office. Despite his complex condition, the Pope’s situation remains stable as he receives medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital.

Pope’s Condition and Treatment

On Tuesday morning, the Holy See Press Office reported that “the Pope slept through the night and now continues to rest.” The statement also confirmed that he is undergoing respiratory therapy and physiotherapy while using a nasal cannula for oxygen as part of his high-flow ventilation treatment.

Pope Francis has been battling bilateral pneumonia since February 14, and his health has required careful monitoring by medical professionals from the Governorate of Vatican City State and doctors from Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital.

Monday’s Health Scare

According to the Holy See Press Office, Pope Francis experienced “two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.” To address these issues, medical staff performed bronchoscopies to remove the mucus buildup.

“[On Monday] afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father remained alert, oriented, and cooperative at all times,” the Press Office reported.

Despite the severity of his condition, medical tests indicate that Pope Francis does not have a new infection, as his blood work did not show an elevated white blood cell count. However, doctors caution that “his clinical condition remains complex, and further respiratory crises remain possible.” His prognosis remains “guarded,” meaning that while he is stable, the situation could still change.

A Time for Prayer

With Pope Francis’ health remaining fragile, the Vatican has emphasized the importance of prayer during this time. On Tuesday morning, the Pope dedicated his time to rest and prayer, drawing strength from his faith. Catholics around the world are encouraged to offer prayers for his continued recovery and well-being.

As the Holy Father continues his treatment, the faithful remain hopeful for his health to improve. The Vatican will continue to provide updates as his condition progresses.
