Faithful to Mark First Anniversary of Pope Francis’ Death with Rosary, Mass, and Vatican Tribute

One year after the passing of Pope Francis, the Church is preparing to honor his memory with prayer, reflection, and remembrance centered in one of Rome’s most beloved Marian shrines.

According to Vatican News, commemorations will take place on April 21 at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where the late Holy Father chose to be laid to rest. The anniversary marks a full year since his death at Casa Santa Marta at 7:35 a.m. on April 21, 2025.

The day’s observances will begin with a Rosary in the Pauline Chapel, a place closely associated with Pope Francis’ deep Marian devotion. The chapel houses the revered icon of Mary, Salus Populi Romani, before which he prayed frequently throughout his pontificate. In fact, a commemorative plaque to be unveiled during the tribute recalls that he paused there in prayer 126 times. The inscription honors him as “Francis Supreme Pontiff, who paused 126 times in devout prayer at the feet of the Salus Populi Romani; according to his will, rests in this Papal Basilica,” according to Vatican News.

Following the Rosary, a Holy Mass will be celebrated in the Basilica, uniting the faithful in prayer for the repose of his soul and in thanksgiving for his life and ministry. During the liturgy, a message from Pope Leo XIV—currently traveling on an Apostolic Journey in Africa—will be read, connecting the universal Church to this moment of remembrance.

The commemoration will also extend beyond the Basilica itself. The celebration will be broadcast for pilgrims gathered in the square outside and streamed worldwide, allowing Catholics across the globe to participate in honoring the late Pope.

In addition to the liturgical events, Vatican News will release a documentary reflecting on Pope Francis’ legacy. The film looks back on what it describes as the life of “the Pope of mercy” and “the Pope of the peripheries,” highlighting defining moments of his pontificate through archival footage and symbolic imagery, according to Vatican News.

As the Church gathers in prayer, the anniversary serves not only as a remembrance of a beloved shepherd, but also as an invitation to reflect on his enduring call to mercy, humility, and care for those on the margins.
