Pope Leo XIV Marks One-Year Anniversary as the First American Pope

As Pope Leo XIV marks the end of his first year as the first American pope, many Americans are reflecting on a pontificate that has quickly become associated with outspoken calls for peace, human dignity, and moral clarity amid global conflict and political division. According to a recent report from The Guardian, Catholics and non-Catholics alike have reacted strongly to the Holy Father’s willingness to publicly challenge political leaders, including President Donald Trump.

The report highlighted growing public attention surrounding Pope Leo XIV’s repeated appeals for peace, especially regarding the conflict involving Iran and Israel. The Guardian noted that Pope Leo warned that a “delusion of omnipotence” was fueling the war, drawing criticism from President Trump, who accused the pope of “endangering a lot of Catholics” because of his condemnation of the conflict.

Many Americans interviewed by The Guardian described Pope Leo as a spiritual leader focused on the Gospel rather than political ideology. Brock Horton, a retired public school teacher from Texas, told the outlet that “Pope Leo is bringing Jesus’s teachings forward instead of church dogma.” Horton added, “If you can’t welcome strangers and treat everyone with love and dignity, you have no place leading anyone.”

Others praised the pope for speaking openly about war, suffering, and human dignity. Kelly Raghavan of California said she admired Pope Leo’s “outspokenness,” while Chris Kell, an interfaith minister from Minnesota, said the pope’s responses have been rooted in “unshakeable faith” rather than political attacks, according to The Guardian.

Several Catholics interviewed also described Pope Leo XIV as continuing the pastoral tone established by Pope Francis while speaking even more directly on issues of violence and injustice. One former Christian interviewed by The Guardian said the pope has been “direct in calling out the un-Christian actions and ideologies held by supposed Christian leaders and movements.”

The article also noted that some respondents believe Pope Leo has not gone far enough in confronting political leaders. Others compared his advocacy for peace with Pope Francis’ strong emphasis on climate change and care for the poor. A retired teacher from California told The Guardian that while Pope Leo has been less vocal on environmental issues, “his call for less killing and more talking to arrive at peace is absolutely a Christian (and moral) tenet.”

For Catholics, the reactions reveal how the papacy continues to carry immense moral and spiritual influence far beyond the Church itself. Whether praised or criticized, Pope Leo XIV’s first year has placed renewed attention on the Church’s teachings about peace, the dignity of every human person, and the responsibility of Christians to stand firm in the face of violence and division.
