America’s Catholic bishops gather June 11 to consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, marking a historic moment as the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of its founding.
The consecration takes place during the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ spring assembly in Orlando, Florida. While countless Catholic families, parishes, schools, and ministries have consecrated themselves to the Sacred Heart over the centuries, this is believed to be the first time the bishops of the United States have united in formally consecrating the nation, according to the National Catholic Reporter.
Archbishop Alexander Sample of Portland, Oregon, chairman of the bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty, said the consecration is intended to inspire Americans to place their trust in Christ and renew their commitment to living the Gospel in public life.
“As we reflect with gratitude on the blessings God has bestowed on our country, our devotion to the Sacred Heart demands that we consider how we might foster truth, justice and charity in American life,” Sample said in a video promoting the service, according to the National Catholic Reporter.
The Sacred Heart devotion centers on Christ’s sacrificial love for humanity and has been cherished by Catholics for centuries. Images of the Sacred Heart commonly portray Jesus revealing His Heart, surrounded by flames, a crown of thorns, and a cross—symbols of His suffering, mercy, and redeeming love.
According to the National Catholic Reporter, the tradition of consecrating nations to the Sacred Heart began in Ecuador in 1874 and later spread throughout parts of Europe and Latin America. Pope Leo XIII consecrated the entire world to the Sacred Heart in 1899, helping establish the devotion as a global expression of Catholic faith.
Recent popes have continued to promote the devotion. Pope Francis frequently pointed to the Sacred Heart as a source of justice, mercy, and service to others. Pope Leo XIV has also encouraged the faithful to turn to the Sacred Heart, describing it as a model of authentic humanity, according to the report.
Catholic scholar Robert Fastiggi told the National Catholic Reporter that the consecration offers an important spiritual reminder in an age marked by division and polarization. He described Jesus as “a king with a heart” and said devotion to the Sacred Heart helps believers remember that all people are accountable to God’s law of love.
Consecrating the nation to the Sacred Heart, Fastiggi said, is “reminding ourselves we’re answerable to the law of God and of love.”
The modern form of the devotion traces its roots to the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a seventeenth-century French nun who reported receiving revelations from Christ concerning His Sacred Heart. According to Fastiggi’s research published in the journal Religions, Jesus revealed to the saint “the marvels of His love and the inexplicable secrets of His Sacred Heart.”
Taking place during the Church’s traditional Month of the Sacred Heart, the June 11 consecration serves as both a public act of faith and a call to spiritual renewal. As Catholics across the country honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus this month, the bishops’ action invites the faithful to seek unity, charity, and a deeper trust in Christ’s enduring love.
