Pope Leo XIV has expressed his condolences and prayers for the late American activist Charlie Kirk, his wife, and their two children, while also voicing deep concern about the growing threat of political violence.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the Pope raised the issue during a meeting with the new U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Francis Burch, on September 13. Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, told reporters: “I know that during the conversation with the new U.S. Ambassador, the Pope confirmed that he is praying for Charlie Kirk, his wife, and his children; that he expressed concern about political violence; and that he spoke of the need to refrain from rhetoric and instrumentalization that lead to polarization rather than dialogue” (Vatican News).
Kirk, co-founder of “Turning Point USA,” was a 31-year-old political activist, author, and media figure. He was tragically shot and killed on September 10 during a public event at Utah Valley University. His funeral is scheduled for September 21 in Glendale, Arizona.
By speaking openly about this act of violence, Pope Leo highlighted not only the loss experienced by Kirk’s wife and children but also the wider danger of words and actions that deepen division. The Pope’s call to resist polarization echoes the Church’s consistent teaching that public life should be grounded in truth, respect, and dialogue.
As Catholics mourn alongside the Kirk family, the Pope’s words are a reminder to turn grief into prayer and resolve. His prayers for Charlie Kirk and his loved ones point us to the hope of eternal life, while his warning about political violence challenges us to be instruments of peace in our own communities.
