As Catholics across the United States conclude the 2026 National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, Pope Leo XIV is calling the faithful to deepen their devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and allow the Eucharist to become a source of renewal, unity, and missionary zeal for the Church in America.

According to Vatican News, the Holy Father delivered a video message marking the conclusion of the nationwide pilgrimage, offering encouragement to participants who spent weeks traveling across the country in prayer, Eucharistic processions, Masses, and adoration.

Reflecting on the Church’s mission in the United States, Pope Leo said the Eucharist must remain at the center of Catholic life.

“Through the gift that is the Eucharist,” the Pope said, “the Church in the United States will find strength to carry on her charitable service to the wider society, especially in the areas of education, healthcare and basic social services, while at the same time continuing her mission to evangelize.”

The National Eucharistic Pilgrimage is part of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ ongoing National Eucharistic Revival, an initiative designed to renew belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. According to Vatican News, this year’s pilgrimage coincided with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

Pope Leo noted that the pilgrims had journeyed through many of the nation’s original colonies under the theme “One Nation Under God,” praying for “unity, renewal and healing” throughout the country.

“These intentions are also close to my own heart,” he said.

The Pope also encouraged Catholics to see the nation’s anniversary not only as a celebration of its earthly history, but as an opportunity to remember their eternal homeland.

“As the country marks the anniversary of the founding of its earthly homeland,” he said, “it is my hope that this experience as pilgrims will also help you to fix your eyes on the heavenly one, and likewise serve as a reminder that the Eucharist is an invaluable gift, our indispensable sustenance.”

According to Vatican News, Pope Leo highlighted the deep Catholic roots of the United States by recalling the historic Thanksgiving Mass celebrated on September 8, 1583, in present-day St. Augustine, Florida, by Spanish explorers and settlers. That celebration, held on the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and shared with members of the local Seloy tribe, marked the location where this year’s pilgrimage began.

The Holy Father described this event as part of the nation’s “strong, though largely unknown, Eucharistic heritage.”

He added that this heritage “far from being forgotten, must continue to serve as source of both renewal and unity.”

Pope Leo also pointed to the witness of America’s saints and holy men and women, including St. Kateri Tekakwitha, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Katharine Drexel, St. John Neumann, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, and Venerable Fulton Sheen, whom he noted “will soon be beatified,” according to Vatican News.

Their remarkable service to the Church, he explained, flowed from a profound Eucharistic spirituality.

“The intense apostolic activity of these holy men and women, and others like them, would not have been possible without the strength they drew daily from moments of silent prayer before the tabernacle,” the Pope said.

Addressing those who completed the pilgrimage, Pope Leo praised the central role that the Eucharist played throughout their journey.

“Along your journey, the celebration of Mass, Eucharistic processions and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament were not lacking, providing you with the strength and nourishment needed to continue your course,” he said.

He concluded by encouraging American Catholics to continue building vibrant Eucharistic communities long after the pilgrimage has ended, placing their lives under God’s loving providence and allowing Christ in the Eucharist to remain the foundation of their faith, service, and witness to the Gospel.
