Five U.S. States Turn Away from Pride Month and Reclaim June for God and Family

As many Americans begin the month of June with annual Pride Month celebrations, several states have chosen a different focus this year, issuing proclamations that emphasize marriage, family, faith, and traditional values.

According to LifeSiteNews, five states — Tennessee, Indiana, Alabama, Arkansas, and Utah — have designated June as either “Nuclear Family Month,” “Strong Families Month,” or “Fidelity Month,” highlighting what their leaders describe as the importance of family stability and moral foundations in society.

Tennessee was among the first to act, passing a resolution in April recognizing June as “Nuclear Family Month.” The measure defines the nuclear family as “consisting of one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children” and states that it is “God’s design for the familial structure” and has been “the bedrock of society since the creation of the world,” according to LifeSiteNews.

The Tennessee resolution further states that the nuclear family has been “the basic building block of Tennessee’s society throughout her formative years” and helped create prosperity within the nation.

Indiana followed with a similar proclamation from Governor Mike Braun. Reflecting on his own family, Braun said, “As a father of four and grandfather of seven, I have seen firsthand the impact that loving, committed families can have across multiple generations.”

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, this proclamation recognizes the important role families play in shaping the future of our state and our country,” Braun added, according to LifeSiteNews.

The Indiana proclamation also cites research suggesting that children living with their married biological parents experience stronger physical and emotional well-being. It further states that “strong families are the most effective means to raise children into capable adults.”

In Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed June as “Strong Families Month,” emphasizing the role of parents in raising future generations.

“The example of my own parents showed me that strong families begin with strong parents,” Ivey wrote on social media, according to LifeSiteNews. “We proudly recognize the mothers and fathers raising the next generation and preserving the timeless values that guide Alabama.”

The proclamation describes families as “the foundation of healthy communities across our state” and notes that children raised in stable family environments are more likely to graduate from high school, avoid substance abuse, and achieve economic stability as adults.

Meanwhile, Arkansas and Utah have designated June as “Fidelity Month,” a movement first proposed by Princeton University professor Robert George.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders described the observance as a celebration of “fidelity to family, fidelity to country, fidelity to God.” She said the month provides an opportunity to recognize “the values of faith, liberty, and patriotism,” according to LifeSiteNews.

The Arkansas proclamation states that cultivating “fidelity to God, family, community, and country contributes to human flourishing and supports a healthy, stable, well-ordered society.” It also encourages citizens to renew commitments to virtue, responsibility, and shared moral foundations.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox likewise proclaimed June as “Fidelity Month,” calling attention to what he described as America’s core values.

In a video shared online, George explained the purpose behind the observance, saying June should be “the month that we rededicate ourselves to the great principles that have been our sources of unity and strength in the United States — the principle of fidelity to God, of fidelity to our spouses and families, of fidelity to our country and to our communities.”

“These values have weakened in our society and it’s our job to strengthen them,” George said.

For Catholics, the emphasis on marriage, family life, and fidelity echoes long-standing Church teaching. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, open to the gift of children, and that the family serves as the primary community where faith, virtue, and human flourishing are nurtured.

As these state proclamations gain national attention, supporters see them as an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of faith-filled families and the values that have traditionally shaped both Church and society.
