On April 2, 2025, a coalition of pro-life organizations united in a nationwide protest to demand the end of taxpayer funding for abortion providers, specifically Planned Parenthood. The rallies, organized by groups such as the Pro-Life Action League and Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, were part of the Nationwide Day of Protest to Defund Planned Parenthood. These organizations are calling on Congress and the White House to redirect public funds toward health centers that affirm the sanctity of life, in accordance with Catholic teaching on the dignity of the human person.
Matt Yonke of the Pro-Life Action League emphasized the disproportionate role Planned Parenthood plays in abortion services, stating, “Planned Parenthood provides less than 1% of annual pap tests and clinical breast exams but performs 42% of annual abortions in the U.S. They’ve been caught shielding child predators, defrauding Medicaid, and harvesting fetal tissue for profit” (CNA, 2025). Yonke went on to explain that, under the Trump administration, efforts to defund Planned Parenthood are back on the table, stating, “Americans, even people who don’t have moral qualms about abortion, don’t want their tax dollars going to abortion.”
The April 2 protests were not limited to a single location. In fact, over 80 rallies took place across 20 states, underscoring the widespread and growing dissatisfaction with the allocation of taxpayer funds to abortion providers. According to Yonke, these rallies reflect a broad coalition of support among pro-lifers, including Christians of various denominations. One such rally took place at the Planned Parenthood-Aurora Health Center in Aurora, Illinois, a facility that offers both surgical and chemical abortions. Yonke described it as “definitely an ecumenical effort among Christians,” highlighting the unity across religious communities in the fight for life.
The issue is not just a matter of public protest, but also legislative action. The Trump administration is moving forward with plans to freeze $27.5 million in federal funds for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers from the more than $286 million allocated to the Title X program for the current fiscal year (CNA, 2025). This follows a broader concern about federal funding for organizations that provide “sexual and reproductive health services,” including abortions. In total, federal funds for domestic and international health organizations amounted to approximately $8 billion during the 2019–2021 period, with Planned Parenthood receiving $148 million in HHS grants, as well as substantial payments from Medicaid and Medicare (CNA, 2025).
Pro-life groups, however, have made it clear that their opposition to Planned Parenthood’s funding is not an attack on healthcare but a plea for funds to be directed toward pro-life alternatives. Yonke stated, “We do not want to reduce spending on legitimate healthcare… defunding Planned Parenthood would not reduce the overall pool for spending on healthcare or women’s healthcare in particular” (CNA, 2025).
Legislators are also moving to enact laws that would remove taxpayer funding from abortion providers. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, introduced the End Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Providers Act, which seeks to defund Planned Parenthood on a national scale. Hawley, a staunch advocate for the unborn, commented, “Americans have long made it clear that they oppose taxpayer-funded abortions” (CNA, 2025). This sentiment is echoed in the growing political and grassroots push for action on this issue.
As the pro-life movement gains momentum, pro-life advocates continue to urge the public and elected officials to stand for life in every circumstance. Monica Miller of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, who led protests in Michigan, asserted, “We want to draw attention to this issue and let Planned Parenthood know we are not going away” (CNA, 2025). The calls for defunding Planned Parenthood are not just about reducing government spending—they are about ensuring that taxpayer dollars do not support an industry that profits from ending innocent human life.
For Catholics, the issue is not just political; it is deeply moral. The Church teaches that all human life, from conception to natural death, is sacred. By standing up for the unborn and advocating for the defunding of Planned Parenthood, Catholics are fulfilling their role as protectors of life in a culture that increasingly devalues the dignity of the human person. As pro-life activists continue their efforts, the message is clear: the defense of life is a call to action, one that requires us to speak out, stand firm, and work tirelessly to protect those who cannot defend themselves.
