Archbishop’s Call to Restore St. Michael Prayer Is a Reminder: Catholics Need This Prayer Everywhere

A renewed call from Archbishop Alexander Sample is striking a chord with Catholics far beyond Portland — because the need for the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel is no longer limited to one archdiocese. Catholics need this prayer everywhere.

According to LifeSiteNews, Archbishop Sample recently directed that the traditional St. Michael Prayer once again be prayed after every Mass celebrated in the Archdiocese of Portland.

“l am again directing that this is prayed after the conclusion of every Mass celebrated in the archdiocese,” the archbishop wrote in a May 12 pastoral letter, according to LifeSiteNews.

His message comes at a time when many faithful Catholics feel surrounded by spiritual confusion, division, attacks on the family, declining belief, and growing hostility toward Christianity. For many believers, the archbishop’s call is not simply about restoring a tradition — it is about recognizing the reality of spiritual warfare and the urgent need for prayer.

Archbishop Sample warned that Satan “seeks to divide, disrupt and interfere in our cooperation with God,” according to LifeSiteNews. That warning resonates far beyond Oregon.

The Prayer to Saint Michael has long been regarded by Catholics as a powerful plea for heavenly protection. First composed in 1884 by Pope Leo XIII, the prayer was introduced after the pope reportedly experienced a terrifying vision concerning attacks against the Church. He ordered that it be prayed after Masses throughout the Catholic world.

Today, many Catholics believe the need for that prayer is greater than ever.

The spiritual battles facing families, parishes, schools, and society cannot be fought with politics or human strength alone. Catholics are increasingly turning back to prayer, fasting, Eucharistic devotion, and traditional practices that call upon God’s protection.

Archbishop Sample’s letter also encouraged Catholics to pray the Sacred Heart Novena, fast for the Church, and practice both spiritual and corporal works of mercy. According to LifeSiteNews, he reminded the faithful that prayer and sacrifice together “open the door for the Lord to act in powerful ways.”

“When we pray and sacrifice together as one Church, we open the door for the Lord to act in powerful ways,” Archbishop Sample wrote, according to LifeSiteNews. “If we entrust this work to Him with faith, we will surely see the fruits of His grace.”

For many Catholics, the archbishop’s message is a reminder that the St. Michael Prayer should not only echo after Mass in Portland — it should be prayed in churches, homes, classrooms, and families everywhere.

In an age marked by fear, temptation, confusion, and spiritual attacks, Catholics are once again being reminded that heaven has already given the Church weapons for the battle. One of them begins with the words:

“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.”
