Truth has become a right-wing concept. Say it, and you are considered right-wing. And to be right-wing is to be aligned with the forces of evil—people not to be argued with, but removed and silenced, lest you stand against all good things. This is part and parcel of a substitution of knowledge by ideology. Ideologies of various kinds now hold absolute sway. Nothing can challenge the idea. Why? Because the ideas that have become the absolute orthodoxy on the left are said to embody goodness, virtue, and the betterment of humanity. Stand against any of them, and you are not merely wrong-headed but evil, standing in the way of human progress and wishing bad things for people and the planet. Consequently, you cannot be argued with. You must be stopped, stifled, refused a platform. Nobody must hear what you say.
These ideologies are many. Multiculturalism insists you cannot say Western society—or any other—is better or worse than another. Lifestyle choice insists you cannot say any family or household arrangement is better or worse than any other. And so on. The point of an ideology is that the idea is absolute; it cannot admit dissent or challenge. An ideology is therefore inimical to reason itself. Bring a set of facts that challenge the governing idea—facts showing children are better off with a father and a mother, or that the earth was warmer many millennia ago, or whatever else contradicts the orthodoxy—and you are told these cannot be facts. You are lying. You must be lying. We will not even hear them. Ideology has declared evidence nowhere. And if evidence is nowhere, then rationality and reason are nowhere, because you cannot have reason without evidence and without the distinction between truth and lies.
We now inhabit a horrific and terrifying situation in which the brightest and best in our universities—the people entrusted with the education of the young, the transmission of our culture, and the thinking of great thoughts—are promulgating a culture inimical to reason itself. They believe they stand for reason. They tell us that anyone who objects is stupid, an imbecile, their imbecility proven by belief in something as ridiculous as objective truth. Yet they themselves have made our universities into crucibles not of knowledge but of the destruction of reason. What we are living through in Britain and the West is even worse than the potential destruction of political liberty, worse even than the destruction of the Western nation and national identity. We are living through the destruction of reason. Rational argument, discussion, and civil discourse—encompassing competing ideas, disagreements handled with civility—are gone, replaced by insult designed not merely to wound but to silence and shut down the argument.
This is the age of which the prophet warned: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter” (Isaiah 5:20). Lies are elevated as truth; truth is branded as lie. We are living it now.
From a Catholic standpoint, none of this is surprising, and none of it is inevitable. God is Truth—“I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6)—and the human mind is ordered to that truth by nature. Reason is not a partisan possession or a social construct to be discarded when inconvenient; it is a gift of the Creator, the light of the intellect that participates in the divine Logos. The Church has always held that faith and reason are complementary, not contradictory: fides et ratio. Objective truth exists independently of ideology, consensus, or power. Natural law, written on the human heart and confirmed by revelation, teaches that certain arrangements of family and society are ordered to human flourishing and others are not. The complementarity of man and woman, the irreplaceable roles of father and mother, the goodness of the stable family—these are not “lifestyle choices” open to endless redefinition; they are realities discoverable by reason and illuminated by faith. A multiculturalism that treats every culture as equally valid and forbids any ranking or critique is not charity; it is a relativism that empties the Gospel of its claim that Christ is the unique Savior and that certain moral truths are universal.
Ideologies that demand absolute assent, suppress evidence, and redefine dissent as hatred are therefore not only political errors but spiritual ones. They invert the order of reality and treat the human person as raw material for utopian projects rather than as a creature made for truth, goodness, and communion with God. When universities abandon the pursuit of truth for the enforcement of orthodoxy, they cease to be places of education and become instruments of formation in falsehood.
The Catholic response is not withdrawal into private piety, nor is it a matching ideology of power. It is the recovery of reason in the light of faith, and the courage to speak the truth in love. This means forming minds—our own and the next generation’s—in the habits of clear thinking, the study of natural law, and the witness of the saints who refused to call evil good. It means supporting institutions, schools, and universities that still regard objective truth as real and reason as trustworthy. It means refusing the bargain that silences truth in exchange for peace or platform. It means the ordinary means of grace: the sacraments, prayer, and the life of the Church, which alone can sustain a person when the surrounding culture treats the very distinction between truth and falsehood as optional. Ultimately it means trusting that the Truth who became flesh has already overcome the world, and that no ideology, however absolute its claim, can finally extinguish the light of reason or the freedom of those who seek Him.
